PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A second half rally fell just short for the Towson University women's basketball in a 50-45 loss at Drexel University on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. The Tigers were paced by redshirt senior forward
LaTorri Hines-Allen who had 13 of her 19 points in the second stanza.
Drexel scored 23 of the game's first 28 points and led 23-5 with 8:07 to go in the first half.
Rachel Pearson hit three three-pointers during that run by the Dragons. Back-to-back buckets from Hines-Allen and senior guard
Markell Smith made it a 23-9 game with 6:14 showing on the clock. Pearson's fourth triple of the first half gave Drexel a 28-9 lead with 4:55 showing on the clock. Towson scored five of the final seven points in the half as the Dragons (19-9, 13-4 CAA) took a 30-14 lead into the locker room.
Drexel shot 38.7% from the field while the Tigers shot 23.1%. The Dragons held a 22-19 edge in the rebounding battle. Pearson led all scorers with 12 first half points while Hines-Allen had six points and five rebounds.
Towson came out of the break firing as a 12-4 run to start the second half cut Drexel's lead to 10, 36-26 with 12:37 to play. Hines-Allen had seven of the Tigers' 12 while senior guard
Ciara Webb tallied the other five. Drexel responded with an 8-2 run of its own and pushed its lead back to 16, 44-28 with 7:30 to play. Pearson drained her fifth three-pointer of the game during that run.
Towson scored 17 of the game's next 19 points and cut the Drexel lead to one, 46-45 with 43 seconds to play. Webb connected on a pair of three-pointers during that run while Hines-Allen added four points.
Sarah Curran made a jumper with 16 seconds to play which pushed the Drexel lead back to three, 48-45. Towson (10-19, 6-11 CAA) got the ball back with a chance to tie but turned the ball over with seven seconds left.
Jamila Thompson made a pair of free throws with four seconds to play which sealed the 50-45 win for the Dragons.
Drexel shot 26.9% from the field in the second half and 33.3% for the game. The Tigers posted a 41.4 field goal percentage in the second stanza and 32.7% for the game. The Tigers won the rebounding battle, 42-35.
Hines-Allen added a team-high nine rebounds to go with her 19 points. Webb finished with 11 points and six rebounds while Smith pulled down eight rebounds.
Pearson led Drexel with 15 points and three steals while
Jackie Schluth added 10 points and five rebounds.
The Tigers wrap up the regular season when they visit William & Mary on Wednesday, March 4 at 7 p.m.
