Tigers Turn Five Double Plays in Loss at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Towson baseball team turned a season-high five double plays, but it was not enough as an unearned run proved to be the difference in a 3-2 loss at Navy Wednesday afternoon.

The Tigers defense kept the game close by turning five double plays.  Towson has turned eight double plays over the past two games.

Towson (1-10) got a strong start from Nick Cioffi.  The junior held the Mids off the board through the first four innings before a couple errors in the fifth allowed two runs to score.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the third as Brendan Butler walked and advanced to third on a Danny Caddigan single to center.  John Drexel scored the runner from third with a sacrifice bunt to the right side.

Towson added to its lead in the fifth as three walks loaded the bases.  Richie Blosser drew the fourth walk of the inning to make it 2-0.

Navy (11-4) finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth as a pair of singles and an error loaded the bases with no outs.  With one out, Brad Borosak doubled in a pair of runs.  Chris Acker would then come out of the bullpen and get a double play to end the inning with no further damage.

A two-base throwing error to start the bottom of the sixth put a runner on second with no outs.  After the next two hitters reached to load the bases, Acker enticed a double play to limit the damage to just one run.

That run would prove to be the game winner as Acker (0-1) was the tough-luck loser.  He allowed just the one unearned run on one hit over 2.2 innings.  Cioffi received a no decision after giving up two runs and striking out four over 4.1 innings.

Jett Meenach (4-0) earned the victory after allowing just two hits in 4.1 shutout innings.

The Tigers return to the diamond Friday as they play their first game at Schuerholz Park.  Towson will take on Yale with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
