TOWSON, Md. – Senior right hander
David Sapp threw a career-best six innings against UMBC Wednesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park. Sapp's effort was not enough as the Tigers fell 12-0 to the Retrievers.
Sapp (0-1) gave up a run in the first inning before settling into a rhythm. He cruised through the second inning before an error led to an unearned run in the third. Sapp kept the Retrievers off the board in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings before running into some tough luck in the seventh.
UMBC (4-7) started the seventh with a single up the middle, a bloop single just inside the right-field line and a bunt single that hugged the line. The Retrievers got a two-run Hunter Dolshun before Jake Barnes plated two runs with a double into the left-field corner.
The Retrievers put the game away with a six-run eighth inning.
The Tigers (2-15) was able to get baserunners, but were not able to capitalize. Towson stranded nine base runners and went 0-for-8 with runners on third base.
Chris Henze was a bright spot for the offense as he went 2-for-3. His single in the second inning nearly got the Tigers on the board before the runner was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second.
Brendan Butler went 1-for-3 with a double in extending his hit streak to eight games.
The Tigers return to action Friday evening as they open CAA play at College of Charleston. The series gets underway at 6 p.m.
