TOWSON, Md. – Seniors
Samantha Brookhart,
Kelly McQuilkin and
Alyssa Ferro of the Towson University women's lacrosse team were named the team captains for the 2017 season, head coach
Sonia LaMonica announced.
"Sam, Alyssa and Kelly have each been determined individuals who understand that our success is driven through putting the team first," said LaMonica. "They bring a positive outlook each and every day and care deeply about this team. I believe they will collectively lead our squad in a winning direction and I'm thrilled for them to receive this honor."
Brookhart has been a mainstay in the midfield for the Tigers since her arrival on campus. The midfielder, who will focus more on the attack this year, has appeared in all 57 games over the last three years and was a key contributor to the Tigers capturing the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title in 2014 and 2016. Last season, she was one of four Tigers to record at least 30 points on the season and finished second on the team with 21 assists. Brookhart ranked seventh in the CAA while averaging 1.05 assists per game last spring. She has 27 career goals and 42 career assists for 69 career points. She ranked fourth on the team with 19 draw controls and now has 52 career draw controls.
McQuilkin has been a key cog on the defensive line for the Tigers during her career. She has appeared in 54 games during the last three years and played a key role in the Tigers winning the CAA title in 2014 and 2016. McQuilkin and the Tiger defense have held 34 of their 57 opponents over the last three years to nine goals or less and have posted a 28-6 record in those contests. The Tiger defense turned in one of its most impressive performances last spring as they held 16 of 20 opponents to nine goals or less and posted a 15-1 mark in that situation. Towson was ranked among the Top 10 in the nation for scoring defense all season last spring. McQuilkin had 18 caused turnovers as a junior and now has 39 in her career. She has 49 career ground balls and 16 career draw controls.
Ferro gives the Tigers a dynamic component on attack. She has appeared in 36 career games and scored 13 goals with two assists for 15 points as a sophomore. After missing the 2015 season due to injury, Ferro bounced back last year to contribute 14 goals and three assists for 17 points. Last year she scored a goal in six straight games mid-season. Ferro had a hat trick against James Madison and tallied three points (two goals, one assist) against the Dukes in the CAA Championship game. Her best offensive performance came against UC Davis as a sophomore when she scored a career-high four goals. She has nine career ground balls and nine career caused turnovers.
