BALTIMORE – Eventually, what goes up, must go in.
It took some time to prove that theory correct as the Towson University men's basketball team missed all 13 of its 3-point shot attempts in a forgettable first half. Fortunately, there was another stanza to play.
The team that couldn't shoot straight transformed into the squad that refused to miss during an incandescent second half performance.
Raining jumpers like Jimmy Chitwood in the movie "Hoosiers", Towson detonated for eight 3-pointers after intermission. The Tigers used that strong shooting to erase an early seven-point second-half deficit and defeat Morgan State, 78-72, in a rock 'em, sock 'em non-conference contest at Hill Field House Tuesday night before the usual cacophonous cavalcade of enthusiastic supporters.
Despite their three-point accuracy temporarily malfunctioning, the resilient Tigers finally saw the comforting parabola of the orange ball from their crystalline jump shots swish through the net. Garnished with flawless backspin, shots that couldn't find the basket -- even with the aid of a GPS -- in the first 20 minutes, suddenly fell refreshingly through the hoop, barely hitting iron.
Trailing 30-25 at intermission, Towson found the perfect panacea for its three-point shooting malady by pounding the paint. The Tigers scored their first three baskets from close range. That helped space the floor and the Tigers found their groove by knocking down wide-open shots and taking control of the contest.
