ELON, N.C. – A hot-shooting Elon University team defeated the Towson University women's basketball team 80-58 on Friday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Junior guard
Raven Bankston led the Tigers with 18 points and six rebounds in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED- Elon had the hot hand in the first quarter, shooting 52.9% from the field and outscored the Tigers 24-8.
- The Phoenix closed the first quarter on an 18-2 run and held the Tigers scoreless for the final five plus minutes of the stanza. Shay Burnett had seven points and three assists in the first 10 minutes of play.
- Towson found a little bit of a rhythm with its shot in the second quarter as the Tigers shot 47.1% from the field. However, the Phoenix stayed hot shooting 46.2% from the field and going 8-for-11 from the foul line.
- Elon outscored the Tigers 21-18 in the second quarter and led 45-26 at the half.
- The Phoenix shot a blistering 68.8% from the field in the third quarter and outscored the Tigers 22-12. Burnett had six points and three assists in the stanza to help the home team take a 67-38 lead after three.
- The Tigers had their strongest quarter of the game in the fourth period. Towson made six field goals and went 8-for-13 from the foul line in the quarter. The visitors also held Elon to a 26.7% field goal percentage and forced the Phoenix into three turnovers. The Phoenix claimed the 80-58 victory.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE- Elon shot 49.2% from the field while Towson shot 37.3% for the game.
- Freshman forward Brittany Tarr led the Tigers on the boards with seven while adding eight points.
- Towson had 10 steals to Elon's six in the game. Nine Tigers recorded at least one steal in the game.
- Freshman guard AJ Timbers knocked down three three-pointers in the game and finished with nine points.
- Burnett led all scorers with 19 points, six rebounds and six assists.
The Tigers are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 14 when they host College of Charleston at 2 p.m. in SECU Arena. It will be the Tigers' "Think Pink" game and all fans are encouraged to wear pink to support breast cancer awareness.
