Fast Start Carries Towson Past Georgetown, 11-4

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Towson University softball team used a fast start to defeat Georgetown, 11-4, in the second game of the Willie Jewel Invitational Saturday morning at Charleston Southern. The Tigers (3-1) defeated Georgetown for a second time in two days.
 
Unlike Friday's contest which was decided in Towson's final at-bat, the Tigers made sure it would enjoy a stress-free afternoon by scoring the first six runs.
 
How It Happened
  • Towson scored four runs in the first inning following RBI hits from Nicole Stockinger, Holiday Cahill and Erin Drennan.
  • Cahill had three hits and drove home four runs for the second consecutive contest.
  • Olivia Yarbrough had three hits and Caroline Reid added two hits to help Towson's 13-hit attack.
  • Reid tripled to begin the second inning and scored on Shelby Stracher's sacrifice fly that gave Towson a 5-0 lead.
  • Yarbrough's third-inning RBI single stretched Towson's edge to 6-0.
  • Giovannelli's three-run homer highlighted the Hoyas' four run third inning.
  • Cahill calmed things and answered by smashing a two-run homer in the fourth inning that gave the Tigers an 8-4 lead.
  • Towson took advantage of a Georgetown error to score three runs in the fifth inning.
  • Stracher, Stockinger, Cahill and Reid combined to score nine of Towson's 11 runs.
  • Megan Dejter tossed a complete game with four strikeouts to earn her first victory of the season.
  • Two of her strikeouts were in the seventh inning.

  • The Tigers have won 20 consecutive games when scoring at least seven runs.
  • This was the first time in 98 games that Towson scored double digit runs in consecutive contests.
  • The last time the Tigers scored 10+ runs in consecutive contests was when they beat Morgan State in a doubleheader by scores of 14-2 and 15-7 on April 11, 2014.
  • Stracher had a hit in each of Towson's opening four games this weekend. She has a six-game hitting streak.

Towson returns to South Carolina next weekend to compete in the Kickin' Chicken Classic hosted by Coastal Carolina. The Tigers meet Cleveland State and Seton Hall on Friday, Feb. 19. They conclude the weekend with games against Coastal Carolina and Appalachian State on Saturday, Feb. 20.
