Tigers Fall in 9th in Series Finale

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Towson baseball team overcame an early deficit to tie the game late, but it was New Mexico State that got a walk-off single in the ninth to the hand the Tigers a 9-8 defeat in the series finale Sunday afternoon.
 
How it Happened
  • The Tigers (0-3) wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as the Richie Palacios doubled with one out and scored on A.J. Gallo's two-out single up the middle.
  • The Aggies (3-0) answered back in the home-half of the inning by pushing across four runs on three hits.
  • A fielding error in the fourth helped the Tigers score two more runs.  Clark Clatchey plated the first run with a groundout before Mark Grunberg delivered an RBI single to center field.
  • Towson pushed across four runs in the sixth inning to take its first lead of the game at 7-6.
  • Jay Sanford stated the inning with a double into the left-field corner.  Colin Dyer walked to put two runners on with no outs.
  • After the next two hitters were retired, Palacios drove in two runs with a single up the middle. 
  • Brady Policelli followed with an RBI double to score Palacios.
  • NMSU tied the game in the sixth before taking a one-run lead in the seventh.
  • The Tigers tied the game in the eighth thanks to a failed pickoff attempt.
  • Grunberg drew a leadoff walk and stole second.  With runners on the corners and two outs, a failed pickoff attempt allowed Grunberg to score the unearned run.
  • The Aggies got some help in the bottom of the ninth as a walk and a hit by pitch put two runners on with no outs.  After the next two hitters were retired, Cameron Haskins ended the game with a pinch-hit RBI single.
  • Lee Lawler (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing one run on three hits over 1.2 innings.
  • Brent Worthen (1-0) struck out six over 3.1 innings to earn the victory.  He allowed two hits and one unearned run.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • The Tigers offense collected 12 hits for the second-straight game.
  • Richie Palacios started his hot start to his career by going 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.
  • A.J. Gallo had his second-straight multi-hit game after going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
  • Grunberg and Sanford each added two hits.

The Tigers return to action Friday afternoon as they open a three-game series at Presbyterian.  First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
