Late Run Lifts Delaware to 66-62 Win over Tigers

TOWSON, Md. – The University of Delaware closed the game on a 14-2 run and claimed a 66-62 win over the Towson University women's basketball team on Friday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. Senior guard Dominique Johnson scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Tigers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Blue Hens scored nine of the game's first 15 points and led 9-6 with 3:27 to go in the first quarter.
  • Towson closed the quarter on a 10-4 run and took a 16-13 lead after one period. Johnson scored half of the Tigers' points during that stretch while freshman guard Sianni Martin added three.
  • The Tigers opened the second quarter on an 11-3 run and took a 27-16 lead with 5:31 to go in the stanza. Martin had a pair of baskets during that scoring stretch.
  • The two teams continued to battle as Johnson's third three-pointer of the first half put the home team ahead 32-23 with 3:18 left on the clock.
  • Delaware scored nine of the final 14 points in the second quarter and pulled to within five, 37-32 at the half. Courtni Green had five points in that final run.
  • Johnson, who already holds the school record for career three-pointers, became the first Tiger in school history to connect on 200 career threes with her fifth triple of the game at 8:53 of the third quarter. That bucket gave Towson a 40-35 lead.
  • A 9-0 run by the visitors gave Delaware a 44-40 lead with 4:03 to go in the stanza. Green had five points for the Blue Hens during that stretch.
  • Towson responded with a 9-4 run and took a 49-48 lead after three quarters. Freshman forward Brittany Tarr completed a three-point play during that stretch.
  • The Tigers (5-16, 2-8 CAA) scored 11 of the first 15 points in the fourth quarter and led 60-52 with 6:32 to go in the game. Tarr had five points during that stretch while Martin added four points.
  • Sade Chatman hit one-of-two from the foul line with 5:58 showing on the clock that started the game changing 14-2 run for the visitors. Makeda Nicholas had six straight points for the Blue Hens (11-10, 6-4 CAA) during that run.
  • Towson cut the Blue Hens' lead to two, 64-62 with a Martin bucket with 49 seconds to play. However, the Tigers were unable to get another bucket to fall and Nicole Enabosi made two from the foul line with seven seconds to play to seal the 66-62 win for Delaware.

QUOTABLE
  • "I thought it was a hard fought game for both teams," said Towson head coach Niki Reid Geckeler. "You look at the promise of my young players, Sianni and Brittany both had good games. We are a young team and we're going to take some bumps."

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson shot 50% from the field in the first quarter and 60% in the second quarter. However the Tigers were held to a 35.7% field goal percentage in the third quarter and 22.2% field goal percentage in the fourth.
  • Delaware scored 40 of it's 66 points in the paint.
  • Johnson led the Tigers with 23 points and her five three-pointers gave her 200 career three-pointers. She is the first player in school history with 200 career threes.
  • Martin posted 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists while Tarr had a career-high 12 points and seven rebounds.
  • Towson matched its season-high with five blocked shots in the game.
  • Delaware edged the Tigers in the rebounding battle, 38-35.
  • Green led Delaware with 16 points while Nicholas added 10 points and 11 rebounds.  


The Tigers are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 7 when they host Hofstra at 1 p.m.
