Dyer Wins Game With Bases Clearing Triple in the 14th

NORFOLK, Va. – Junior Colin Dyer delivered a bases-clearing triple in the top of the 14th inning to give Towson a 6-3 victory over Norfolk State Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
  • After neither team was able to score since the sixth inning, Colin Gimblet started the 14th inning with a single to right field.  After Brady Policelli sacrificed Gimblet to second, Chris Henze was intentionally walked.
  • A groundout to the right side was followed by an intentional walk to A.J. Gallo
  • That set the stage for Dyer who ripped the first pitch he saw into left center for the bases-clearing triple.
  • That was more than enough for left hander Kyle Stricker who danced around a one-out single to close out the game.  It was the second-straight strong performance for Stricker (2-0) who did not allow a run over 4.2 innings.  He allowed three hits and struck out three.
  • Stricker has not allowed a run over his last two outings spanning 11.0 innings.
  • Towson (3-9) got on the board in the first inning after Gimblet doubled to left center and scored on a Henze single up the middle.
  • Henze started another ally in the fourth with a leadoff single to center field.  After moving to second on a groundout, Dyer drove in Henze with a single to right center.
  • The Spartans (5-9) got one run back in the home-half of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Kyle Vaas.
  • Henze scored again in the sixth inning as he started the frame with a triple to right center.  Richard Miller followed with run-scoring single to center field.
  • NSU tied the game in the sixth on a solo home run from Brian Beard and a wild pitch with a runner on third.

Inside the Numbers
  • The 14 inning game was the longest for the Tigers since losing 2-1 in 15 innings to Pittsburgh in the first game of a doubleheader on March 29, 2013.
  • Chris Henze finished the day by going 4-for-6 with a triple, RBI and three runs scored.
  • Colin Dyer drove in four runs in the victory.  It tied his career high for RBIs, set in a victory over UNCW in 2015.
  • Three Tiger relievers combined to allow just one run over nine innings.  Lee Lawler allowed one run over 1.2 innings, Paul Beers surrendered just two hits over 2.2 innings before Kyle Stricker closed out the game after allowing just three hits over 4.2 shutout innings.
  • The victory was the first road victory of the season for the Tigers.  The previous two victories were neutral site wins.
