Tigers Have Chances Against UMBC

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson baseball team nearly erased an early deficit as they loaded the bases in the ninth inning, but were unable to score in falling 4-3 to UMBC Wednesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.

How It Happened
  • The Retrievers (15-14) jumped out to an early lead as they scored three runs, all with two outs, in the first inning.  The first run scored on an infield single on a close call at first base.  That play was followed by an RBI single and a run-scoring double.
  • UMBC added an unearned run in the third as a dropped fly ball came around to score on a sacrifice fly to right field.
  • Towson had chances to get on the board early in the game as they stranded four runners in the first two innings.
  • The Tigers (14-20) got on the board with a two-out rally of their own in the fifth.  Richie Palacios started the rally with an infield single to hole at short.  Colin Gimblet put two on by drawing a walk.
  • Brady Policelli followed with a nine-pitch at-bat that ultimately ended with a three-run home run to left field.  It was the team-leading fifth long ball for Policelli.
  • Towson looked to tie the game in the ninth inning as Spencer Sutton started the frame with a pinch-hit single to left center.  With two outs, Policelli walked and Chris Henze later drew an intentional walk.
  • Unfortunately a swinging strikeout ended the game.
  • Paul Beers (0-3) took the loss after surrendering four runs, three earned, on five hits over 2.1 innings.
  • Mark Smith was effective in relief as he allowed just three hits and struck out three over 4.2 scoreless innings.
  • Matt Allen did not allow a base runner in his two innings of work.
  • Connor Hax (2-1) picked up the victory, allowing just one hit over three innings.
  • Policelli led the offense by going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs.  He was also hit by a pitch and drew a walk.  Policelli raised his season average to .405.
  • Palacios collected two hits and stole two bases.
  • Cuinn Mullins added two hits, including a double.
