Tennis Earns Close 4-3 Victory Over Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Towson women's team earned a close 4-3 victory over Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival Drexel at Vidas Court in Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon.
 
THE BASICS
Towson (9-8, 2-4 CAA) at Drexel (12-5, 1-3 CAA)

Format: singles and doubles (doubles counts as one point)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (DOUBLES PLAY)
  • Drexel opened the match winning two of the three doubles matches.
  • The Tiger duo of Renate van Oorschodt and A.J. Gomer combined for a close 7-5 victory at No. 2 doubles.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (SINGLES PLAY)
  • The Tigers won four singles matches to secure the win over the Dragons.
  • Barbora Vasilkova earned a key third set comeback victory at No. 3 singles for the match's deciding point. After dropping the first set 6-2, she fought back for a 6-4 win in the second set. Vasilkova battled back from being down 5-2 in the third set, saving two match points to ultimately win the set 7-5 against Lea Winkler.
  • Lucy Williams won at No. 2 singles in straight sets, defeating Clary Rodriguez Cruz 6-4, 6-0.
  • Sophie Lesage earned a third set comeback win over Kendra Bunch at No. 4 singles. She fell in the first set 6-3 before win the final two sets 6-2 and 6-4.
  • van Oorschodt posted a straight sets win at No. 6 singles, winning 6-4, 6-4 against Fiorella Coria.
  • The Tigers' two singles losses occurred in three sets. Nicole Shakhnazarova dropped the first set 6-3 before fighting back to win the second set 6-4. She ultimately fell 6-3 in the final set to Honami Yazawa at No. 1 singles.
  • Lucy Gloninger fell by a close 7-6(5) in the first set to Ryshena Providence at the No. 5 spot. She won the second set by a decisive 6-1 score before falling 6-4 in the final set.
 
UP NEXT
The Tigers return home to the newly renovated Towson Center Courts to open a four-match home stand. Towson hosts CAA foe Delaware on Friday, April 8 at 2 p.m.
