Tigers Walk Off in 13

TOWSON, Md. – It was only fitting that on Friday the 13th, the Towson University baseball team needed 13 innings to walk off with a 10-9 victory over Delaware in the first game of a three-game series Friday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.

How It Happened
  • The Tigers used patience in the 13th inning as they did not even put a ball in play in the frame.  With one out, Richie Palacios was hit by a pitch.  Colin Gimblet followed with a walk, and Brady Policelli was intentionally walked to load the bases.  Chris Henze needed only watch four pitches outside the strike zone for the game-winning RBI.
  • The Blue Hens (29-20, 7-12 CAA) jumped out to the early lead as Diaz Nardo led off the second with a home run, and Nick Patten followed suit with a two-run homer later in the inning.
  • The Tigers (19-30, 9-10 CAA) got a run back in the home half of the inning as A.J. Gallo singled and took second on a balk.  A single from Colin Dyer put runners on the corners before a successful double steal scored Gallo.
  • UD pushed their lead to 5-1 in the third after Jordan Glover hit a solo home run to left.  A bases loaded walk later in the inning plated the second run.  The inning could have been a lot worse, but the Tigers avoided further damage with an inning-ending 1-2-3 double play.
  • The Tigers got their offense going in the fourth inning as singles by Gallo and Dyer, along with a walk to Danny Caddigan loaded the bases.  Trey Martinez drove in a run with a groundout, before Palacios and Gimblet followed with RBI singles.  Policelli tied the game with a grounder to short.
  • The Blue Hens got the lead back in the fifth on a solo home run from Patten, his second of the game.
  • The lead was extending in the sixth as the second bases-loaded walk scored a run and a fielder's choice plated another.  A throwing error on that play allowed the third run of the inning to score.
  • The Tigers stormed back again in the eighth as Dyer and Tristan Howerton singled to start the inning.  After both runners advanced on a groundout, Palacios ripped a two-run triple into the gap in right center.  With two outs, Palacios hustled home with the tieing run on a wild pitch.
  • The Blue Hens looked to take a two-run lead in the 10th, but Mullins had other ideas as he scaled the wall and pulled the ball back to end the inning.
  • Releiver David Marriggi (2-5) was nearly unhittable in his five innings of work.  The lefty allowed just one hit and struck out five in the victory.
  • Nick Spadafino (5-3) did not allow a hit in his 4.2 innings of relief, but did walk one batter, including the game-winning run.
  • Policelli led the offense by going 3-for-5 with a double, home run and two RBIs.  He also drew two intentional walks.
  • Dyer added three hits and scored a pair of runs.
  • Palacios added two hits and drove in three runs.  He also scored three runs to raise his seasons total to 50.
