TOWSON, Md. – Towson University got a grand slam from
Richie Palacios and a solo shot from
Chris Henze in a six-run third inning, but it was not enough as George Mason erased a big deficit in a 11-10 victory Tuesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.
How It Happened
- The Patriots (19-32) got on the board in the first inning after a leadoff single came around to score on Garett Driscoll's RBI single to left field.
- The Tigers (19-33) gained the lead in the second inning as Billy Plante tripled to right center and scored on Danny Caddigan's bunt to the right side. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, Henze drove in two runs with a single to left center.
- The Towson offense took advantage of a hit batter and two walks to load the bases. Caddigan drove in one run with a single through the left side before Richie Palacios hit the first pitch he saw over the fence in right field for a grand slam. It was the sixth home run of the season for the freshman.
- With two outs, Henze added to the lead with a solo home run to left center, his third of the season.
- Mason began a comeback in the fourth on a two-run home run from Ryan Tassone. Tyler Nelin drove in two more runs in the fifth with a single though the left side.
- The Patriots pushed across three more runs in the sixth to pull within one run, but the Tigers got the run back I the home-half of the inning Tristan Howerton walked and came around to score on Plante's double to right field.
- The Patriots tied the game in the seventh on a two-run homer from Bailey Klein, then Klein won the game with a solo home run in the ninth.
- The Tigers threatened to tie the game in the ninth as they loaded the bases with one out. Unfortunately, a strikeout and a groundout ended the rally and the game.
- Matt Allen (0-1) took the loss after allowing one run on three hits over two innings.
- Mark Maksimow (2-0) threw one shutout inning to earn the victory.
- Zach Mort (8) picked up the save with a scoreless ninth inning.
- Caddigan led the offense by going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored.
- Henze collected two hits and drove in three runs, while Palacios added four RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
