WASHINGTON, D.C. – It was a tough start to the season for the Towson University women's soccer program as the Tigers fell 6-0 at Georgetown University Friday afternoon.
The Hoyas (1-0-0) used a three-goal surge midway through the first half to separate for the 10-player Tigers. Sophomore
Alexis Toles was issued a red card in the ninth minute, forcing Towson (0-1-0) to finish the game down a player.
How it Happened
- Following Toles' red card, Georgetown's Rachel Corboz converted a penalty kick in the ninth minute to put the Hoyas up 1-0. The hosts extended the lead to 2-0 after Corboz's second of the game in the 31st minute.
- A tally in the 36th minute from Hoya Casey Richard, followed by Corboz finishing the hat trick in the 37th gave Georgetown a 4-0 lead at halftime.
- Corboz added an assist in the 70th minute, playing in a ball to Grace Damaska. The Hoyas finished the scoring in the 86th minute on an unassisted strike from Carson Nizalek.
- Senior midfielder Emily Marshall had a scoring chance in the 13th minute, but the attempt was deflected by a defender in front of the goal.
- Towson got one scoring chance in the in the 56th minute as freshman Justine Stoner logged the first attempt of her Tiger career. The attempt went over the cross bar.
Behind the Numbers
- Junior keeper Emma Burnett made the first start of her career. Burnett made six saves in the season opener.
- Towson registered two shots during the match, with Marshall and Stoner taking one chance each. Neither shot was on goal as Georgetown's Arielle Schechtman and Lauren Gallagher combined to keep a clean sheet.
- The Hoyas managed 14 shots in each half and had 20 total corner kicks in the contest. The Tigers earned one corner kick as senior Izzy Latour returned to the field after an injury in 2015.
