Tigers Thwarted at Mason Sunday Night

FAIRFAX, Va. – In a clash between two former conference opponents, the Towson Tigers were thwarted 3-0 on the road at George Mason University Sunday night.

The tilt at George Mason Stadium was the first night game of the 2016 season for Towson (0-3-1) as the Tigers sported all-black kits for the first time this season as well.

How It Happened
  • The first half was even through as both sides had solid scoring chances. George Mason (3-1-0) took six shots, putting one on frame. The Tigers' starting keeper, Taylor Sebolao, made her lone save of the first half on that shot.
  • The Tigers took four chances, with one on cage. Emily Marshall put that chance on goal but was halted by Mason's Kirsten Glad.
  • After the first 45 minutes, the game was deadlocked 0-0 in the first nonconference meeting between the programs.
  • The Patriots got the game's first goal in the 54th minute as Rebecca Callison notched her first of the season.
  • Despite trailing 1-0, Towson jumped back on offense and challenged the Patriots less than a minute later. Senior Natalia Pinkney chipped in a pass to McKenzie McCaull. The sophomore get her head on the ball, but the chance missed the left post by inches.
  • Mason extended its lead to 2-0 in the 63rd minute on a Nicolette Herdegen shot from inside the box. Nia Elbeck and Emily Littell were each credited with the assist.
  • Once again Towson responded after a Patriot goal with offensive pressure. Junior Maddie Bove took a shot a minute later, followed by a rebound chance from rookie Elizabeth Coletti. Glad made a sprawling save to keep Towson off the bound.
  • The Patriots put the game out of reach in the 78th minute on a Elbeck tally in the 78th minute on an assisted shot.

Behind the Numbers
  • The Patriots out-shot the Tigers 15-8, putting five shots on goal. Sebolao made two saves in the contest, as did Glad.
  • Towson earned one corner kick, coming in the first half. George Mason had five corners, with three in the second stanza.
  • Sunday's game was the 12th meeting all-time between the programs. Towson and George Mason were both members of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) from 2002 until 2013.

Next up for Towson
  • The Tigers head to Philadelphia for a pair of matches next week, opening with Saint Joseph's University at 5 p.m. on Friday. Towson follows that game up with a 3 p.m. match on Sunday at Temple University.
  • Saint Joseph's (2-1-0) needed an overtime goal to upend Towson's CAA foe, University of Delaware, in a Sunday afternoon game.
