Tigers Host VCU in Home Opener Tuesday

Finally a Home Match: After playing its first 13 matches on the road, the Tiger volleyball team makes its home debut on Tuesday, Sept. 20. Towson plays host to former Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival, VCU in SECU Arena at 6 p.m. Live stats and video of the match can be accessed via the schedule page on TowsonTigers.com. Fans can also follow the Tigers on Twitter (@Towson_VB) for updates.

Looking at the Tigers: Towson finished the weekend with a 2-1 record and claimed a second place finish at the Mercer Invitational. Senior Jessica Lewis and sophomore Jocelyn Kuilan were named to the all-tournament team. Lewis powers the Tiger offense with 191 kills, 133 digs, 16 service aces and a .324 hitting percentage. Kuilan is contributing 125 kills, 21 blocks and 15 service aces on the season. Freshman Marrisa Wonders  and junior Julymar Otero have dished out 296 and 206 assists,
respectively. Redshirt sophomore Anna Holehouse anchors the backline with 139 digs while senior Lindsay Flaherty has a team-high 46 blocks.

Scouting the Opponents: VCU has won five straight matches following a 3-1 win over Liberty to close out the VCU Invitational this past weekend. Alicia Kandler leads the Rams offense with 122 kills, 117 digs and 16 service aces while Rebekah Strange has 261 digs and 14 service aces. Jasmin Sneed has contributed 59 blocks.

Series History: Tuesday's contest will be the 48th meeting all-time between the Tigers and Rams. VCU holds a slight 25-22 edge in the series, however the two schools have not met since 2011 when both were members of the CAA. That year, the Rams ended the Tigers season in the CAA Tournament with a five-set thriller.

Big at the Net: One of the things that Towson head coach Don Metil said the Tigers needed to work on before the season started was their blocking. The Tigers have stepped up in that area of late. Towson matched its season-high with 13 team blocks against Fairleigh Dickinson. It was the fourth time in the last six matches that the Tigers had recorded 10 or more team blocks in the match. Towson is a perfect 4-0 this season when it records 10 or more team blocks in a match. Since the start of the 2014 season, the Tigers are 18-1 when they record 10 or more team blocks in a match.

Aces for Autism: For the third straight season, the Tigers will do their part to raise funds and awareness for a good cause with their "Aces for Autism" program. Fans can make pledges either in a flat amount using the donation boxes found on the mezzanine level in SECU Arena or take the TU Team Challenge and pledge per Towson's Kill, Block, Dig, Assist, or Ace season totals. Fans' donations to this event will go toward the organization of their choice, or fans can allow the volleyball team to allocate the funds to the autism organization of its choice.

It's Good to be Home: Playing within the friendly confines of  SECU Arena has been good for the Tigers. Since the arena opened in 2013, the Tigers have posted a 28-10 record at home. Towson has won at least 10 matches at home in each of the last two seasons. The best season for the Tigers in SECU Arena was 2014 when the team went 14-2 at home.

Can You Dig It? Several players turned in career performances on the backline for the Tiger defense this past weekend. Sophomore Meredith Dignan collected a career-high 18 digs against USC-Upstate. Senior Jessica Lewis had a career-best 20 digs also against the Spartans. Freshman Annie Ertz also turned in a strong performance versus USC-Upstate with a career-high 17 digs.

Up Next: The Tigers visit Delaware on Saturday night before returning home for a three-match home stand which begins Friday, Sept. 30 against College of Charleston. That contest will be the Tigers'  "Hometown Heroes" match and all military personnel and first responders can receive free tickets for the 7 p.m. contest.
