Cuevas and Lee Lift Tigers Over William & Mary, 64-60

TOWSON, Md. – Double-double performances from junior forward Mary Cuevas and redshirt sophomore center Maia Lee helped lift the Towson University women's basketball team to a 64-60 win over William & Mary on Friday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. The Tigers (10-7, 3-3 CAA) had four players score in double figures and secured their second straight win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tribe (13-3, 3-2 CAA) opened the game on a 6-0 run and Towson head coach Niki Reid Geckeler called timeout at 8:22 of the first period.
  • The Tigers responded out of the timeout with a 14-2 run, which gave the home team a 14-8 advantage with 2:32 left on the clock. Sophomore guard Sianni Martin, junior guard Raven Bankston and Cuevas all scored four points during that run.
  • A lay-up from Cuevas with 23 seconds to go in the stanza gave Towson an 18-12 edge after one period of play.
  • A 10-4 run to start the second period gave the Tigers a 28-16 lead with 3:39 to go in the stanza. Martin tallied five points during that scoring stretch as Towson took its largest lead of the game.
  • William & Mary responded with a 9-1 run and cut the Tiger lead to four, 29-25 with 1:34 showing on the clock. Marlena Tremba led the Tribe with five points during that run.
  • Despite a late three from the Tribe, Towson held a 30-28 advantage at the half.
  • William & Mary opened the third quarter on a 14-8 run and took a 42-38 lead with 2:24 to go in the period. Tremba drained a pair of three-pointers during that key run for the Tribe.
  • Towson closed the quarter on an 8-4 run and the two teams found themselves deadlocked at 46-46 after three periods of play. Bankston went 4-for-4 from the foul line for the Tigers in the final minute plus.
  • The Tigers scored 13 of the first 18 points in the fourth quarter and took a 61-51 lead with 3:25 to play in the game. Martin paced the Tigers with seven points in that stretch.
  • William & Mary used a 7-0 run to cut the Tiger lead to three, 61-58 with 1:59 to play. Jenna Green had five points for the Tribe in that stretch.
  • Bankston scored the final three points of the game for the Tigers and helped the home team secure the 64-60 victory.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson won back-to-back games for the first time since its five game win streak to open the season.
  • The Tigers won back-to-back CAA games for the first time since early January of the 2014-15 season.
  • Towson shot 44.4 percent from the field while limiting William & Mary to a 38.8 field goal percentage.
  • A key difference in the game came at the foul line as the Tigers were 14-for-20 while the Tribe was just 3-for-3.
  • Towson won the rebounding battle 43-33.
  • Cuevas and Lee became the first Tigers to record a double-double in the same game since LaTorri Hines-Allen and Ciara Webb did so against Drexel on Feb. 15, 2015.
  • Cuevas had a season-high 15 points and a season-best 14 rebounds and added three blocks.
  • Lee posted a career-high in points (12) and rebounds (10) while adding two steals.
  • Martin returned from missing two games due to injury and posted a game-high 16 points to go along with four stelas and three rebounds.
  • Bankston was the fourth Tiger in double figures as she contributed 13 points and four steals.
  • Green led William & Mary with 15 points and eight assists.

The Tigers hit the road to visit James Madison on Sunday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. Towson earned a 54-51 win when the two teams met in SECU Arena two weeks ago.
