The Tigers travel to long time rival Delaware on Wednesday evening before heading to James Madison for a Sunday afternoon matinee. Looking at the Tigers: The Tigers split their two Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) matches last week, falling at College of Charleston before beating UNCW. Sophomore
Silvia Grassini led the Tigers with 21 kills and a .613 hitting percentage last week. Junior
Jocelyn Kuilan paces the Tigers on the season with 220 kills, 88 digs and a team-high 21 service aces. Fellow junior
Carola Biver is contributing 204 kills and 173 digs while sophomore
Marrisa Wonders has dished out a team-high 471 assists. Redshirt junior
Anna Holehouse leads the defensive efforts with 356 digs as junior
Olamide Sonuga has a team-high 69 blocks.
Scouting the Blue Hens: Delaware enters Wednesday's action looking to snap a five-match losing streak.
Maria Bellinger had 10 kills and eight digs in a 3-0 loss to College of Charleston last time out. A large chunk of the Blue Hens' offense runs through Bellinger as she has recorded 263 kills, 147 digs and 13 service aces.
Abby Skryd has handed out 376 assists to go along with 100 digs while
Julia Hayes has a team-high 48 blocks.
Delaware Series History: The Tigers renew one of their longest running rivalries on Wednesday night as it will be the 81st meeting all-time between the two squads. After the two squads split their two meetings last year, the all-time series is tied at 40-40.
Carola Biver had 19 kills, 23 digs and seven blocks in the two matches combined last year.
Sweet Swing: Towson sophomore
Silvia Grassini proved to on target with her attack attempts at UNCW on Sunday. Grassini knocked down a season-high 14 kills on 18 attempts and recorded no errors. She posted a .778 hitting percentage for the match. It was the best hitting percentage by a Tiger since
Jessica Lewis hit .889 (16 kills, no errors, 18 attempts) against Alabama A&M last year. Grassini enters play this week ranked third in the CAA and 35th nationally for hitting percentage this season (.391).
Aces are a Girls' Best Friend: Towson turned in another strong performance from the service line against UNCW. The Tigers finished with seven service aces as
Carola Biver led the way with three aces and
Silvia Grassini added two. It was the sixth time this season the Tigers have recorded seven service aces in a match. Towson now has 88 service aces on the season and has recorded four or more service aces in a match 14 times.
Triple the Action: Senior
Julymar Otero posted her second triple-double of the season on Sunday. Otero finished with 12 kills, 22 assists and 12 digs against UNCW. Otero is one of just 23 Division I players nationally to record a triple-double this season. She is also one of eight players to record multiple triple-doubles on the season. In research going back as far as 1993, Otero is believed to be the first Towson player to have two triple-doubles in the same season.
Balanced Attack: The Tigers showcased a balanced attack in the win over UNCW. The Tigers had five players record double-digit kills in the contest.
Silvia Grassini led the way with 14 kills while
Carola Biver added 13 kills.
Julymar Otero posted 12 kills against the Seahawks while
Annie Ertz and
Olamide Sonuga had 11 kills each. It was the first time this season and the first time since Sept. 20 of last year that the Tigers had five players with double digit kills in the same match.
Can You Dig It? Redshirt junior
Anna Holehouse continues to move her way up the career digs list at Towson. Holehouse's 33 digs last weekend gave her 1,434 career digs as a Tiger. She is just the fourth player in program history to record 1,400 or more digs in a career. Holehouse currently ranks third in school history for career digs. She needs 183 more digs to move into the top two for career digs at Towson.
Having recorded 300 or more digs in each of her three seasons for the Tigers, Holehouse is averaging 4.72 digs per set for her career. That ranks 12th among active players nationally for career digs per set.
Up Next: After battling the Blue Hens on Wednesday, the Tigers will head to James Madison on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
