TOWSON, Md. – In a fitting passing-of-the-torch moment, the Towson University women's soccer team got a game-winning goal from senior co-captain Maddie Bové as the Tigers topped visiting UNCW 1-0 Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Afton Kalkose logged a point for a second-straight game as she sent in the game-winning assist to junior
McKenzie McCaull, who then found Bové for the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) win.
Towson (5-10-2, 2-5-0 CAA) snapped a four-game conference skid with its final game of the season at the Tiger Soccer Complex. It marks the second-straight season the Tigers edged UNCW 1-0 in Towson.
Prior to the match, the coaching staff and program honored the five seniors: Maddie Bové,
Kristyn Hubbard,
Madi Lawrence,
Kelsey Ritter and
Taylor Sebolao.
How It Happened
- Towson had a great chance in the third minute of the match as Justine Stoner sent in a perfect cross that bounced off the chest of Kalkose right to Bové. The senior captain got off a shot in the box, but it went over the cross bar.
- Bové got a second chance in the 20th and made good on the opportunity. Kalkose sent in a cross from near the corner flag, which was tipped by McCaull right to Bové, who buried the chance.
- In the 34th minute, Sarah Quick ripped a shot towards the left post but Seahawk keeper Sydney Schneider beat her to the chance.
- Redshirt senior Sebolao made a trio of saves in the first half, but none were particularly challenging. Schneider made two stops in the first 45 minutes.
- UNCW's best chance came in in the 76th minute as Meg Salvadore got off an excellent header opportunity. But Sebolao was equal to the task and kept the fifth clean sheet for Towson this year.
Behind the Numbers
- UNCW (5-10-2, 1-5-1 CAA) out-shot the Tigers 16-9, but managed to put only five shots on goal. Sebolao stopped all five for the 19th shutout of her Towson career.
- Bové extended her point scoring streak to three, scoring twice in the last three games and adding an assist Thursday at James Madison.
- With the Bové goal, Towson has had a senior score a goal in each of the last three senior days, dating back to the 2015 as Vasthy Delgado scored the game-winner against Elon and last season with Marissa Green notching a marker against the College of Charleston.
