Tigers Earn CAA Point in Scoreless Draw at Northeastern

BROOKLINE, Mass. – In a masterful performance from the defense, the Towson University women's soccer team played defending Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champion Northeastern to a scoreless draw Thursday evening at Parsons field.

Redshirt senior Taylor Sebolao had a career outing as she stoned 18 Huskie shots, setting the program record for most saves in a CAA game. Towson (5-10-3, 2-5-1 CAA) earned a league point with the draw and remained alive in the hunt for the postseason.

How it Happened
  • The first 45 minutes were a feeling out period as the teams combined for eight total shots. Sebolao made three saves in the first half while her counterpart Nathalie Nidetch made one save.
  • Action picked up in the second half as Sebolao and the Tiger defense were put under pressure for seemingly the entire 45 minutes.
  • Northeastern (10-5-3, 4-1-3 CAA) came out firing, taking 24 shots in the second half.
  • Sebolao made several diving saves in the second half to keep the clean sheet. Her defense aided her as well, soaking up four Huskie shots in the second half.
  • Towson's best chance of the game came in the 68th minute as senior co-captain Maddie Bové looked to extend her point streak to four games, but the would-be go-ahead goal. Bové had Nidetch beat to that side of the frame, but the effort clanged off the right post.
  • The Huskies got a dangerous chance of their own in the 80th minute when Hannah Lopicolo found herself in a similar situation. The Northeastern shot hit where the crossbar and left post meet.
  • Sebolao and the defense were busy again in the first 10 minutes of overtime, as the redshirt stopped three more Huskie shots, bringing her total to 18.
  • Northeastern had several chances in the final frame, but none were on goal. Two shots went wide while the third was blocked.

Behind the Numbers
  • Thursday's game was the first-ever overtime contest between the two teams in Brookline, Massachusetts. It was the first draw in the series since a 1-1 draw in 2001.
  • The draw snapped a five-game skid for the Tigers against Northeastern. The all-time series between the teams remains deadlocked at 8-8-2 since it was first contested in 1997.
  • Sebolao made the most saves for a Towson goalie in the program's CAA era (2002). Her 18 saves are tied for fourth in program history for a single game. She is also tied for the fourth-most saves in a game in CAA history.
  • Northeastern out-shot the Tigers 36-6, including 24-3 in the second half. The Huskies took six corner kicks, while holding the Tigers without a chance from the flag.
  • The Tigers have picked up at least one point in each of their last two CAA games to keep their CAA Tournament hopes alive.
  • Towson has now played 16 games decided by one goal or resulting in a tie. Towson has played six overtime games in 2017.

Next up for Towson
  • Towson rounds out the regular season with a trip to historical Williamsburg, Virginia.
  • The Tigers will take on host William & Mary on Sunday afternoon. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Albert-Daly Field.
The Tribe was idle Thursday night, but fell 4-2 in their most recent game at Northeastern (October 15).
