In Back-And-Forth Battle Colgate Tops Towson

TOWSON, Md. – In a game that featured 14 lead changes and nine ties, Colgate University battled for a 65-61 win over the Towson University women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon in SECU Arena. The Tigers had four players score in double figures in the same game for the first time since January of last year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Colgate (3-3) opened the game on a 6-2 run following a lay-up from Nia Ahart at 5:33.
  • A three-pointer from junior guard Danielle Durjan allowed Towson to tie the game at 6-6 with 4:40 to go in the period.
  • The Raiders scored seven of the final 12 points in the first period and took a 13-11 edge after 10 minutes of play. Chelsey Koren had three points during that stretch.
  • Colgate opened the second quarter on a 6-1 run and led 19-12 with 7:07 showing on the clock.
  • A lay-up from Summer King gave the visitors a 23-15 lead with 6:14 to go in the period.
  • Sophomore guard Etalyia Vogt tried to get the Tigers back in the game. She had four points during a 10-2 run by the Black and Gold which cut the Towson deficit to one, 26-25 with 2:05 to go in the period.
  • Colgate scored the final five points of the second quarter and took a 31-25 lead at the half.
  • Towson opened the third quarter on a 9-2 run and took its first lead of the game, 34-33 with 6:26 to play in the stanza. Sophomore forward Nukiya Mayo had four points during that stretch while senior forward Mary Cuevas completed a tradition three-point play.
  • The Tigers and Raiders traded baskets over the next several minutes. Cuevas' jumper at 2:22 put the Tigers on top, 41-40.
  • The two teams continued to battle on each end of the court. Senior center Daijha Thomas gave Towson a 46-45 lead with 30 seconds to go in the stanza.
  • However a late foul by the Tigers sent Colgate's Kateri Stone to the line with five seconds on the clock. Stone made one-of-two from the charity stripe and the two teams found themselves tied at 46-46 after three periods of action.
  • A three-point play from Vogt with 8:17 to go in the fourth quarter gave Towson a 52-51 edge.
  • Colgate used a 6-0 run to take a 57-52 lead with 6:23 left in the period.
  • Back-to-back baskets from Cuevas and redshirt senior guard Raine Bankston cut the Colgate lead to one, 57-56 with 5:38 left on the clock.
  • Colgate scored six of the next nine points in the game and led 63-59 with 2:28 to play.
  • Towson cut its deficit to two, 63-61 with 40 seconds left in the game. Bankston found a cutting Durjan under the basket and she converted the lay-up.
  • The Raiders got a pair of free throws from King with 16 seconds to play and took a 65-61 lead, which proved to be the difference in the game.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson shot 35.4 percent from the field while Colgate posted a 34.9 field goal percentage. The Raiders hit five three-pointers to Towson's two.
  • The Tigers held a 46-45 edge in the rebounding battle. Towson has now won the rebounding battle in each of its first five games.
  • Cuevas led the Tigers with 13 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. It was the senior's second double-double of her career.
  • Mayo contributed 13 points and eight rebounds while Vogt had 13 points and five boards.
  • Bankston was the fourth Tiger in double figures as she finished with 12 points, six assists and four steals.
  • Towson finished with eight blocks as Cuevas and Mayo led the way with three each. The Tigers have now blocked six or more shots in four of their first five games.
  • King led Colgate with 15 points and 17 rebounds.

The Tigers will be back on the court on Thursday, Nov. 30 when they host Wagner at 7 p.m.
