Cuevas’ Career Night Leads Women’s Hoops to Victory

TOWSON, Md. -- Right out of the gate, Towson University women's basketball senior Mary Cuevas set herself up for a career night. The 6-4 forward knocked down back-to-back threes to set the tone as the Tigers dispatched visiting Wagner College 64-42 Thursday night at SECU Arena.

Cuevas hit the first two three pointers of the night, and her career, setting the tone for Towson (2-4). The Tigers improved to 2-0 over the Seahawks (1-7) with the victory.

How it Happened

  • The Tigers jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead at the first media timeout, thanks to a pair of three pointers from senior forward/center Mary Cuevas. Kayla Davis added a trey as well while the Seahawks went on a six-minute stretch without a point.

  • Towson capped the quarter with a 20-6 lead over the Seahawks. Cuevas was perfect i the quarter, hitting two threes and another field goal, along with a pair of free throws for 10 points.

  • The Tigers built their lead up to a half-high 17 on a Cuevas layup. Towson weathered a three-minute cold spell before Raine Bankston rolled in a layup. Wagner cut the lead to 10, 31-21, on a Tanasia Russell layup.

  • Bankston snapped the dry spell with a layup with 29 seconds to play in the second quarter, giving the Tigers a 33-21 lead at the break.

  • Out of the gates in the third quarter, Towson got a three from Durjan, followed by a steal that lead to a Nukiya Mayo layup for a quick five-point burst.

  • Towson hit another slow spot as Wagner whittled the lead back down to eight, 40-32, with 5:02 to play in the period. Russell hit a jumper in the paint to get the Seahawks closer.

  • After Mayo and Bankston split free throws, the Tigers held a 12-point lead with 98 seconds to go in the third. Kahleah Dixon-Edwards canned a three to end the period with Towson leading by nine, 46-37.

  • Towson finished the game strong, regaining a 22-point lead. The Tigers' defense was smothering, holding Wagner to just one field goal on 10 tries in the final frame.

  • The Tigers capped the game with a 16-5 run over an eight-minute stretch. Seven different Tigers scored during that span, aided by a 10-of-12 effort at the free throw line.

Behind the Numbers

  • Towson got a career night from Cuevas, who posted her second-straight double-double with 23 points and 10 boards. Of her 23 points, six came on the first-ever three-pointer attempts of her career, both makes, while she went 8-for-11 from the floor.

  • Bankston and Mayo joined Cuevas in the double-digit point club with 16 and 11 points, respectively. Mayo was one rebound shy of a double-double.

  • The Tigers dominated the boards, reeling in 40 while Wagner was alotted just 25. Towson got 18 offensive rebounds for 11 second-chance points.

  • Becoming a staple of the game plan, Towson forced Wagner into 30 miscues, including 13 steals. Bankston and Durjan led the Tigers with three steals apiece.

  • Towson knocked down 20 of its 53 attempts from the field, including five three-pointers.

  • The Tiger starters controlled the offense on Thursday night, with just three of the 64 points coming off the bench.

Up Next for the Tigers

  • Towson will have nearly a week off before its next game.

  • The Tigers host Saint Joseph's on Tuesday, Dec. 5.

  • Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at SECU Arena.
