HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams went back-and-forth early before a lay-up from Sarah Veilleux at 6:13 gave the Hawks (5-3) a 9-7 advantage.
- Mayo hit the jumper and made the ensuing free throw for a tradition three-point play at 5:43 and Towson took a 10-9 edge.
- That three-point play kick started a 17-6 run by the home team to close out the first quarter. Towson took a 24-15 lead after 10 minutes of play.
- Bankston posted five points for the Tigers (3-4) during that run while sophomore guard Etalyia Vogt added four points.
- The Tigers and Hawks traded points to start the second quarter.
- An 8-2 run by the Black and Gold pushed the Towson advantage to 34-19 with 6:25 left on the clock. Vogt scored half of the Tigers' points during that scoring spurt.
- Saint Joseph's used a three-pointer by Kristalyn Baisden at 6:03 to make it a 34-22 game.
- Towson scored 10 of the final 16 points in the stanza and took a 44-28 lead at the half. Five different Tigers tallied a bucket during that stretch.
- The Hawks scored the first two buckets of the third quarter and Towson used an early timeout.
- Out of the break, the Tigers went on a 13-5 run and took a 57-37 advantage with 4:19 to go in the period. Bankston struck for five points during that stretch.
- Saint Joseph's responded with an 11-3 run and cut its deficit to 12, 60-48 with 1:32 showing on the clock. Chelsea Woods scored eight of the 11 points during that stretch.
- Senior forward Mary Cuevas scored four of the final seven points in the stanza which allowed the Tigers to take a 64-51 lead after three periods of play.
- The Black and Gold scored 12 of the first 15 points in the fourth quarter and took a 76-54 lead with 6:10 to play. Mayo tallied four points, all from the foul line while Bankston and freshman guard Jalynn Holmes each had three.
- Towson was a perfect 10-for-10 from the foul line in the final six minutes of the game. Bankston was 6-for-6 during that stretch while Cuevas went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
- A pair of late baskets from Cuevas helped seal a 90-66 win for the Tigers.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Towson demonstrated a balanced attack throughout the game. All nine players who appeared in the contest scored at least two points and grabbed one or more rebounds.
- The Tigers scored 90 points for the second time this season. It was the first time since the 1985-86 season that the Tigers scored 90 or more points multiple times in the same season.
- Towson shot 50.8% from the field and was an impressive 23-for-26 from the foul line, including 15-for-15 in the fourth quarter.
- The Tigers blocked a season-high 12 shots, one shy of the school record.
- Towson won the rebounding battle for the seventh straight game, finishing with 38 boards to the Hawks' 37.
- Bankston scored 20 points for the first time in her career as she finished with a career-high 27. She was a solid 11-for-12 from the foul line.
- Mayo contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double. She also added a career-best four blocked shots
- Cuevas had 18 points, eight rebounds and a career-high six blocked shots.
- Vogt came off the bench to post 11 points and four assists.
- Veilleux led Saint Joseph's with 19 points and five rebounds.
The Tigers will be back in action when they make the quick trip up Charles Street to visit Loyola on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m.
