Towson Places Second with Season-Best 195.025

TOWSON, Md. – Junior Gabriella Yarussi won her first career all-around title to help Towson finish second at its annual Shelli Calloway Invitational on Sunday afternoon in SECU Arena. The Tigers set a season-best team score of 195.025 to defeat No. 24 West Virginia University (194.575) and Temple University (193.575). The University of North Carolina won the meet title with a score of 195.525.
 
Towson had its best performances of the meet in its last two events, balance beam and floor exercise. The Tigers set a season-best 48.975 on beam and matched its season-best of 49.100 on floor. Towson had the highest team scores on those two events out of all four teams competing.
 
The Tigers set or matched five career-best scores and four season-best scores at the meet.

How it Happened
  • Towson opened the meet on vault, scoring 48.175. Gabriella Yarussi matched her career-high of 9.775 on the event to tie for eighth-place. Erin Tucker tied for 14th with a score of 9.675 on that event.
  • The Tigers finished with a team score of 48.775 on uneven bars in the second rotation. Gabriella Yarussi and Tyra McKellar tied for fourth-place with matching scores of 9.825. Yarussi's score is a career-best for the junior on that event. Noelle Harada matched her season-best of 9.725 on uneven bars to place 13th overall. Senior Bridget Steffen made her season-debut after returning from injury to finish tied for 14th (9.700).
  • Towson set a season-best team score of 48.975 on the balance beam, the highest out of all four teams for that event. Gabriella Yarussi was the runner-up for the event with a score of 9.875. Mary Elle Arduino scored 9.825 to tie for third-place. Bayleigh Fobes finished tied for sixth, matching her career-best of 9.775. Tyra McKellar and Noelle Harada both earned 9.750 scores to tie for 10th-place. Harada's score was a season-best for the junior.
  • The Tigers rounded out the meet on floor exercise, matching its season-best team score of 49.100. The Tigers' team score was the highest out of all four teams for that event. Gabriella Yarussi set a career-best of 9.875 to finish second, followed by Tyra McKellar who tied for third-place (9.850). Cortni Baker matched her season-best of 9.825 to tie for sixth-place. Erin Tucker scored 9.800 to tie for eighth.
  • Gabriella Yarussi won her first career all-around title with a career-high score of 39.350. Tyra McKellar finished sixth in the all-around, scoring 38.375.
