Drexel Battles for a Win Over the Tigers

TOWSON, Md. – A strong fourth quarter lifted Drexel University to an 80-65 win over the Towson University women's basketball team on Friday night in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. For the second straight game, the Tigers placed three players in double figures and that group was led by sophomore guard Sianni Martin's 15 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Dragons took a 13-8 lead with 2:56 to go in the first quarter as Ana Ferariu made a lay-up.
  • Towson scored five of the final seven points in the stanza and cut the Drexel lead to two, 15-13 after 10 minutes of play. Redshirt junior guard Raine Bankston drained a deep three-pointer for the Tigers during that stretch.
  • The two teams traded points early in the second quarter as Martin's triple at 5:59 tied the game at 21-21.
  • Sarah Curran scored five of the game's next six points and Drexel took a 27-21 lead with 4:24 left on the clock.
  • Towson answered with a lay-up from redshirt junior forward Jordyn Smith and a three-pointer from freshman guard Etalyia Vogt. The Tigers were down just one, 27-26 with 3:25 left on the clock.
  • Drexel used a 7-0 run to push its lead to eight, 34-26 with 1:23 to play in the quarter. Curran had four of the seven points during that stretch.
  • Smith hit one-of-two from the foul line with 1:11 showing on the clock. That was the final point scored in the stanza as Drexel took a 34-27 lead at the half.
  • Junior forward Mary Cuevas connected on a pair of free throws from the foul line at 7:27 of the third quarter which pulled the Tigers to within five, 38-33.
  • Drexel used a 15-7 run to push its lead to 53-40 with 45 seconds left in the period. Bailey Greenberg struck for seven points during that key stretch.
  • Martin scored the final three points of the quarter and pulled Towson to within 10, 53-43 with 10 minutes to play.
  • Towson opened the fourth quarter on an 8-2 run and the Tigers made it a four point game, 55-51 with 6:45 to go in the game. Vogt drained her second three-pointer of the game during that stretch.
  • A three-pointer from Ferariu on the next possession started a 13-5 run that allowed Drexel to push its lead back to double digits, 68-56 with 3:14 to play. Ferariu had eight points during that scoring stretch.
  • The two teams battled over the final three minutes of the game as Drexel maintained its double-digit advantage en route to an 80-65 win.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Drexel shot 51 percent from the field and drained 11 three-pointers in the game. Towson shot 41.8 percent from the field and hit six triples.
  • The Dragons have now won 17 straight games against the Tigers.
  • Towson won the rebounding battle 34-31 as nine of the 10 Tigers who appeared in the game grabbed at least two rebounds.
  • Martin led the Tigers with 15 points and two steals while senior guard Raven Bankston posted 14 points, five assists and three steals. Raine Bankston added 11 points and four rebounds.
  • Smith led all players with a game-high eight rebounds.
  • Curran led Drexel with 19 points, five rebounds and three assists.
  • Towson finished with nine steals to Drexel's seven.

The Tigers return to action on Sunday, Feb. 19 when they host Northeastern at 2 p.m. The Tigers will recognize alumna Norma Kelly, who is part of the Towson Athletic Hall of Fame, as part of their Black History Month recognition. The Tigers will also welcome back their former players as part of Alumnae Day.
