Early Success Lifts Northeastern Over the Tigers on Alumnae Day

TOWSON, Md. – Northeastern University started the game on a 13-2 run en route to a 63-51 win over the Towson University women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. Freshman guard Etalyia Vogt led the Tigers with a season-high 12 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Huskies opened the game on a 13-2 run behind six points from Francesca Sally.
  • A three-pointer from Claudia Ortiz gave Northeastern an 18-7 lead after 10 minutes of play.
  • Northeastern scored five of the first nine points in the second stanza and pushed its lead to 23-11 with 7:58 to go in the quarter.
  • Towson used a 9-4 run to cut the Northeastern lead to five, 27-22 with 5:02 left on the clock. Vogt had five points during that scoring stretch for the Tigers.
  • Northeastern scored seven of the game's next nine points and pushed its lead to 10, 32-22 with 2:49 to go in the period. Sally tallied four of the Huskies' seven during that stretch.
  • Towson closed the quarter on a 5-2 run and the Huskies took a 34-27 lead at the half.
  • The Tigers scored eight of the first 15 points in the third quarter and pulled to within four, 41-37 with 1:50 showing on the clock. Sophomore guard Sianni Martin had four points during that stretch for the Tigers.
  • Northeastern got a three-pointer from Gabby Giacone with 30 seconds to go and took a 44-37 lead after three periods of play.
  • Martin opened the fourth quarter with a traditional three-point play and Towson trailed by four, 44-40 with 8:47 to go in the game.
  • Northeastern scored the next seven points of the game and pushed its lead back to double-digits, 51-40 with 6:59 left on the clock. Sally tallied five points during that stretch for the Huskies.
  • Towson used a three-pointer from Martin and a jumper from senior guard Raven Bankston to cut the Northeastern lead to six, 51-45 with 6:27 left in the period. However that was a close as the Tigers would get the rest of the way.
  • The Huskies closed the game on a 12-6 run and claimed the 63-51 victory.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Northeastern shot 40 percent from the field and made seven three-pointers. Towson posted a 31.3 field goal percentage and made three triples.
  • Towson recognized its alumnae during the game and Towson Athletics Hall of Famer Norma Kelly during the game.
  • Towson held a 42-41 edge in the rebounding battle.
  • The Tigers had eight steals to Northeastern's seven.
  • Vogt added three steals and two rebounds to go with her team-high 12 points. Martin added 10 points for Towson.
  • Redshirt sophomore center Maia Lee pulled down a team and career-high 11 rebounds.
  • Sally led Northeastern with 24 points and 12 rebounds.

The Tigers hit the road to visit Hofstra on Friday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. Towson then returns home on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. The Tigers will honor their seniors, Bankston and Brianna Bush before the game.
