Tigers Battle for 59-56 Win at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Sophomore guard Sianni Martin scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Towson University women's basketball team to a 59-56 win at Hofstra University in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play on Friday night. The Tigers earned a split of their season series with the Pride and snapped an eight-game losing streak with the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride scored the game's first five points but Towson responded with an 11-2 run and took an 11-7 lead with 3:12 to go in the first quarter.
  • Senior guard Raven Bankston had seven early points for the Tigers.
  • Hofstra scored six of the final eight points in the period and the two squads found themselves tied at 13-13 after 10 minutes of play.
  • Towson opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run and took a 22-13 lead with 4:32 to go in the stanza. That run was keyed by a pair of three-pointers from freshman guard Nukiya Mayo.
  • Hofstra briefly halted the run with a basket from Krystal Luciano at 4:15.
  • A bucket from junior forward Mary Cuevas and a pair of free throws from Bankston gave Towson a 26-15 lead with 2:15 to play in the stanza. That was the Tigers' largest lead of the game.
  • Aleana Leon scored five of the final seven points in the period for the Pride.
  • The Tigers took a 28-22 lead at the half.
  • Towson opened the third quarter on an 11-7 run and took a 39-29 lead with 5:23 showing on the clock. Martin led the Tigers with four points during that key scoring stretch.
  • Hofstra closed the third quarter by scoring 12 of the final 14 points and the two teams were tied at 41-41 with 10 minutes to play. Ashunae Durant and Luciano each had four points during that stretch.
  • Towson opened the fourth quarter on an 8-3 run and led 49-44 with 6:20 to go in the game. Martin drained a pair of big threes for the Tigers during that stretch.
  • The two teams traded baskets as a lay-up from Cuevas with 2:46 showing on the clock put the visitors ahead 53-48.
  • Back-to-back baskets from Durant pulled Hofstra to within one, 53-52 with 1:51 to play.
  • Martin scored four of the game's next six points, which gave Towson a 57-54 lead with 47 seconds to play.
  • Hofstra cut the Tiger lead back to one with jumper with 11 seconds left on the clock.
  • Martin sank a pair of shots from the charity stripe with seven seconds to play which gave Towson a 59-56 edge.
  • Hofstra's last three-point attempt was off the mark and Towson grabbed the rebound to seal the win.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Towson shot 35 percent from the field in the game while Hofstra posted a 38.3 field goal percentage.
  • The Tigers made six three-pointers in the game to the Pride's four. Towson went 11-for-14 from the foul line while Hofstra was 6-for-9.
  • Towson won the rebounding battle, 47-34. It was the third straight game the Tigers won the battle on the boards.
  • Martin added a career-high nine rebounds and six assists to go along with her 21 points.
  • Bankston contributed 16 points and six rebounds while Cuevas had a game-high 13 rebounds and six points.
  • Durant led Hofstra with 18 points and seven rebounds.

The Tigers return home on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. The Tigers will honor their seniors, Bankston and Brianna Bush before the game.
