Late Basket Lifts Elon Over the Tigers, 67-65

TOWSON, Md. – A Shay Burnett lay-up with 3.6 seconds to play lifted Elon University to a 67-65 win over the Towson University women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action. Senior guard Raven Bankston led Towson with 22 points in the Tigers' home finale.

Bankston and fellow senior Brianna Bush were honored before the game as the Tigers celebrated senior day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Phoenix (23-6, 15-2 CAA) opened the game on a 13-6 run as Malaya Johnson connected on a lay-up at 5:51.
  • Towson responded with an 8-2 run and cut the Elon lead to one, 15-14 with 2:46 left on the clock. Bankston drained a three-pointer while junior center Daijha Thomas converted a traditional three-point play during that stretch.
  • Elon scored six of the final eight points in the period and took a 21-16 lead after 10 minutes of action. Jennifer Rhodes scored four of Elon's six points during that stretch.
  • The Phoenix tallied 13 of the first 22 points in the second quarter and led 34-25 with 4:51 to go in the stanza. Johnson scored nine of Elon's 13 points during that scoring spurt.
  • Bankston went 1-for-2 from the foul line at 3:47, which kick started a 12-3 run by the Tigers. That key run sent the Tigers and Elon into the half tied at 37-37.
  • Bankston scored five points for the Tigers during that stretch.
  • Elon opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run and the Tigers (12-16, 5-12 CAA) were forced to call timeout with the visitors leading 44-37 with 8:36 to go in the stanza.
  • Towson responded by scoring the next nine points in the game and took a 46-44 lead with 5:59 to go in the quarter. Junior forward Mary Cuevas had four of the Tigers' nine points during that stretch.
  • Elon went back on top, 47-46 with a Meme Garner three-pointer at 5:23.
  • An 8-0 run gave the home team a 54-47 lead with 3:16 showing on the clock. Redshirt sophomore center Maia Lee scored half of the Tigers' points during that run.
  • Elon scored the final eight points of the third quarter and took a 55-54 lead with 10 minutes to play. Burnett scored four points for the Phoenix during that stretch.
  • The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair that featured five ties and saw neither team take a lead of more than two points in the stanza.
  • A three-point play from Bankston at 2:27 gave Towson a 65-64 edge.
  • Essence Baucom went 1-for-2 from the foul line with 37 seconds to play and tied the game at 65-65.
  • Burnett recorded a steal with nine seconds left and following the timeout, scored the lay-up.
  • Towson had one last chance but a jumper didn't fall and Elon claimed the 67-65 win.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Both teams shot better than 40 percent from the field in the game. Elon posted a 47.2 field goal percentage while the Tigers shot 40 percent.
  • Elon held a slim 39-38 edge in the rebounding battle.
  • Towson recorded 11 steals to the Phoenix's six steals.
  • Bankston had a game-high 22 points for the Tigers and added four rebounds. Sophomore guard Sianni Martin had 15 points and six rebounds while Lee added 10 rebounds.
  • Cuevas led Towson on the boards with seven rebounds and added four points.
  • Rhodes led Elon with 18 points while Johnson had 15 points and eight rebounds. Burnett finished with 13 points and six assists.

The Tigers wrap up the regular season when they travel to Delaware on Wednesday, March 1 for a 7 p.m. game.
