Swimming & Diving Prepares For CAA Championship Meet

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The Towson University men's and women's swimming and diving programs begin postseason action at the 2017 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Swimming & Diving Championship on Wednesday, Feb. 22. The four-day meet runs Feb. 22-25 and will be held at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. It is the first time since 2014 that both diving and swimming will occur simultaneously over the four-day meet.
 
The Towson women's team will be seeking its league-best eighth conference title, while the Tiger men are looking for its first conference championship in program history.
 

Meet Details
The 2017 CAA Swimming & Diving Championship will be held at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Christiansburg, Virginia. The meet begins on Wednesday, Feb. 22 with prelims at noon and finals at 4 p.m. Morning prelims will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday-Saturday, with finals beginning on those days at 5 p.m.
 
Fans can follow along with the championship meet as CAA.tv provides a free online stream for the entirety of the meet.
 
Doors open 60 minutes prior to the start of each session and will be cleared after each session is completed. All sessions are ticketed events and all seats are general admission.
 
Fans can purchase an advanced all-session general admission ticket for $65 plus online processing fees here. An all-session ticket book can be purchased at the door for $70 while supplies last. Fans also have the option to purchase regular single-session tickets for $10 prelims and $15 finals, with sales beginning 60 minutes before each session. Students who are attending the meet and show a valid student ID can receive $5 prelim tickets and $10 finals tickets.

Towson and CAA Championship History
The Tiger men and women both finished in third-place at the 2016 CAA Championship. Towson's men recorded 533 points, while the women garnered 515.50 points.
 
The Towson men's team seeks its first conference championship in program history. The Tiger men posted their best postseason finish at 2015 Championships, finishing in second place behind William & Mary.
 
Towson's women's team is looking for its eighth conference championship in program history. The Tigers won seven CAA titles from 2008-2015, with 2012 (second-place) being the only year that they did not win the title during that eight year span.
 
The Tiger men earned spots at the podium seven times at the 2016 CAA Championships. Jack Saunderson had an impressive performance at the 2016 CAA Championship, finishing with 36 individual points en route to earning the program's first CAA Rookie Swimmer of the Year honors. He set a school record, freshman record and a conference record to win the 200-yard butterfly (1:45.02) in 2016. Saunderson also finished third in the 100-yard butterfly. Nick Breschi won silver in the 200-yard backstroke and bronze in the 100-yard backstroke at the championship meet. Towson's 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard medley relay teams both earned silver.
 
The Tiger women found themselves at the podium 12 times last year. Jacy Icard set a school record (54.62) to win bronze in the 100-yard backstroke at the 2016 conference meet. Ashley Illenye finished third in the 1,650-yard freestyle, while the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay teams also won bronze.
 
Since joining the CAA for the 2002 championship meet, the Tiger men have won 21 individual events and three relays. The Tiger women have posted 61 individual event championships and won 18 relays at the conference meets since 2002.
 

Swimming among the Best
According to CollegeSwimming's CAA rankings, the Tiger men lead the conference with 738.10 points, followed by William & Mary (732.59) and Drexel (713.07). Towson's women are ranked third (718.66), behind William & Mary (730.21) and Drexel (727.52).
 
A few Towson swimmers hold top times among Division I swimmers this season. Jack Saunderson ranks 87th among all Division I swimmers in the 200-yard butterfly with his NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:46.76 from the Bucknell Invitational. The men's team has four relays ranked in the top 100 for Division I teams this season. The 400-yard medley relay (3:19.00) is ranked 72nd and the 800-yard freestyle relay (6:41.99) is ranked 74th. In addition, the 200-yard medley relay (1:31.04) is ranked 92nd and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:03.58) is ranked 96th.
 
On the women's side, Jacy Icard's time of 25.41 in the 50-yard backstroke tied for 97th among Division I swimmers. The women's 200-yard medley relay (1:41.99) is ranked 95th among Division I teams this season.
 

Top Times in the League
Among CAA swimmers this season, the Towson men have recorded 44 top 10 performances, with 24 of those times in the top five.
 
Brandon Ress holds the top conference time for the 200- (1:39.15) and 500-yard freestyles (4:28.54). Will Dougherty has the fastest 1,000-yard freestyle time (9:23.92). Jack Saunderson leads the CAA with a pair of NCAA 'B' Cut times in the 100- (47.92) and 200-yard butterflies (1:46.76). The Tigers' 800-yard freestyle relay (6:41.99) and 400-yard medley relay (3:19.00) also are the best among CAA teams this season.
 
The women have posted 39 top 10 times among CAA swimmers this season, including 19 top five swims. Corie Morton has the fastest time in the conference for the 500- (4:54.88) and 1,650-yard freestyles (16:47.45). Jacy Icard's time of 25.41 in the 50-yard backstroke leads the CAA. Kendall Krumenacker has the top time for the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.83).
 

I'm Honored
Seven Tigers have been recognized for their success in the pool this season. Emily Wilson leads the women with four weekly honors, earning CAA Co-Female Diver of the Week honors on Jan. 31 for her performances at Navy's tri-meet and Delaware's dual meet. She also earned CAA Female Diver of the Week honors after her performance at Bucknell (Dec. 6) and was named New Day USA Female Student-Athlete of the Week on TowsonTigers.com twice (Dec. 6, Oct. 18)
 
Jacy Icard picked up CollegeSwimming.com's CAA Female Swimmer of the Week honors on Jan. 31 after impressing at Navy's tri-meet and Delaware's dual meet. She was named NewDay USA Female Student-Athlete of the Week on TowsonTigers.com on Dec. 6. In additon, Kelsey Jehl has been named CAA Female Diver of the Week honors twice (Nov. 1, Oct. 1) while Kendall Krumenacker has earned CAA Co-Women's Swimmer of the Week plaudits (Nov. 1).
 
Jack Saunderson leads the men's side with eight recognitions this season. He earned his third NewDay USA Male Student-Athlete of the Week honors of the season on Jan. 31 for his performances at Navy's tri-meet and Delaware's dual meet. He was also named CollegeSwimming.com's CAA Male Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 31 for the fourth time this season. Saunderson was named CAA Swimmer of the Week on Dec. 6 for his performance at the Bucknell Invitational.
 
Nick Breschi has picked up CAA Swimmer of the Week (Nov. 8) and NewDay USA Male Student-Athlete of the Week honors (Nov. 1). Will Dougherty has been named CollegeSwimming.com's CAA Male Swimmer of the Week this season (Nov. 1).
