Mistakes Cost Tigers Friday Morning

NORFOLK, Va. – Mistakes proved to be the different Friday morning as the Towson University baseball team committed four errors in falling 10-8 to UMass Lowell.
 
How It Happened
  • The tone for the day was set from the first pitch as a high fly into shallow left field fell in for a double. 
  • A fielding error followed four batters later, opening the gates for a four-run first inning for the River Hawks.
  • The Tigers were able to get back into the game in the sixth inning with the benefit of three walks and an error.  Logan Burke started the inning with a walk and Richard Miller reached on catcher's interference. 
  • Cuinn Mullins drove in Burke with a high chopper off the glove of a leaping third baseman.  Back-to-back walks to A.J. Gallo and Trey Martinez plated the second run for Towson.
  • With two outs, Jay Sanford ripped a bases-clearing double into left field to give the Tigers the 5-4 lead. 
  • Richie Palacios followed with a single through the right side to score Sanford.
  • The River Hawks tied the game with two runs in the third, then got an RBI triple from Colby Maiola as part of a three-run fifth inning.
  • Towson got a run back in the sixth as Gallo lined a double to center field and came around to score on an Andrew Cassard groundout.
  • After UML scored in the top half of the seventh, the Tigers came back in the bottom of the inning with a a run of their own.  Burke started the rally with a one-out single and came into score on Colin Gimblet's pinch-hit single into the hole at short.
  • The Tigers would mount a minor threat in the eighth, but the inning ending on the third double play of the game.
  • Dean Stramara (1-1) took the loss after allowing seven runs, four earned, on nine hits over four-plus innings.
  • Kendall Pomeroy (1-0) allowed one run on three hits over 4.1 innings of relief to pick up the victory.
  • Nick Rand retired all three hitters he faced to earn his fourth save of the season.
  • Burke and Gallo each collected two hits and scored a pair of runs.
