Ross’ Strong Start Not Enough Against Iona

NORFOLK, Va. – The Towson University baseball team got a strong start from senior Kevin Ross, but it was not enough as Iona took advantage of an error to defeat the Tigers, 3-1, Saturday morning.

How It Happened
  • The game was controlled early by both starting pitchers.  Ross and Iona's Patrick Ryan matched zeroes into the fifth inning.
  • With one out in the bottom of the fifth, the skies opened up and the teams went into a one hour and 15 minute rain delay.
  • Ross went back onto the mound after the delay with two one and just one out.  He was able to get out of the frame by retiring the next two hitters.
  • Ross would allow the leadoff hitter in the sixth to reach, but followed it up by getting a double play.  That would be the end of the day for Ross as he allowed just hits over 5.2 shutout innings.
  • It marked the second time in the last three starts that Ross did not allow a run on two hits.  Ross blanked Wagner over six innings two weekends ago.
  • The game would remain scoreless until the bottom of the eighth when a leadoff walk went to third on a one-out single through the left side.  Nico Switalla hit a comebacker to the mound, but the Tigers were unable to turn the double play, allowing the first run of the game to score.
  • The Tigers looked like they would limit the damage to just that one run, but a groundball by the next batter was thrown away.  The error was followed by a two-run single from Sean Scales.
  • Towson tried to mount a ninth-inning rally after A.J. Gallo tripled to left field to start the inning.  Richie Palacios would drive him in with a groundout to short.
  • That would be as close as Towson would get as the next two hitters were retired.
  • David Marriggi (1-1) took the loss after allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits over 2.1 innings.
  • Jared Finkel (1-0) gave up one run on two hits over two innings in picking up the win.
  • Colin Dyer led the offense by collecting two of the team's four hits.
