Tigers Battle Pirates in Series Finale

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Towson University baseball team put together a strong rally late in the game, but it was not enough as No. 25 East Carolina had an answer in a 12-7 victory in the series finale Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened
  • Mark Grunberg helped the Tigers get on the board quickly as he started the game with a single up the middle and stole second.
  • With two outs, Richard Miller drove in Grunberg with a single to second base.
  • ECU got a run back in the second inning before taking the lead in the third inning with three runs off three RBI doubles.
  • Towson got the leadoff hitter on in the fifth and Noah Cabrera followed with a base hit.  Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt from Trey Martinez, and Grunberg grounded out to score the runner from third.
  • The Pirates answered with their second three-run inning of game in the home-half of the inning with the help of back-to-back home runs from Spencer Brickhouse and Eric Tyler.
  • The Tigers put together a four-run rally in the seventh that was started by a Clark Clatchey pinch hit single through the left side.  After two outs, Martinez and Andrew Cassard drew walks to load the bases.
  • Bo Plagge drew the third-straight walk to plate a run before Matt Smith drove in two runs with a single down the right field line.  Miller drove in his second run of the game with a single through the right side.
  • Towson pulled within one run in the eighth as Clatchey walked and hustled around to score on a double from Martinez.
  • ECU responded in the home-half of the inning as four walks helped push across four runs.
  • Michael Adams (2-2) was credited with the loss after allowing four runs in three innings.
  • Tyler Smith (1-0) gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits over five innings to pick up the victory.
  • Matt Smith came off the bench to go 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.  Miller added two hits and drove in two runs.
