Tigers Sweep Sunday Doubleheader

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team continued to get strong starting pitching as the Tigers swept a doubleheader from Wagner Sunday afternoon at Schuerhohlz Park.  The Tigers won the first game 2-1, before taking the night cap 6-3.

Game 1
  • The Tigers got on the board in the second inning as A.J. Gallo ripped a two-out triple into the gap in right center.  Tristan Howerton followed with a walk to put runners on the corners.
  • Towson then successfully completed the double steal for the first run of the game.
  • Starter Kevin Ross made that lead stand up for the first six innings.  The senior allowed just two hits over six shutout innings in the no deicision.
  • The Seahawks managed to tie the game in the seventh inning on a solo home run from Brendan Bennecke.
  • Kyle Stricker (1-0) settled in from that point as he struck out four over the final three innings.
  • With the game tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Logan Burke ripped a single into the gap in right center.  With one out, Cuinn Mullins singled through the left side.  Pinch runner Andrew Cassard hustled to third, and Mullins took second when the throw from left field got past the third baseman.
  • An intentional walk to Richard Miller loaded the bases.  The Seahwaks were able to get the second out of the inning when the first baseman made a diving stop and threw home to get the runner.
  • But before the next pitch was thrown, Nick Robino stopped during his delivery and was called for a balk.  The balk allowed Mullins to score the winning run.
  • Douglas Molnar (0-1) took the loss out of the bullpen, giving up one run on two hits over 3.1 innings.
  • Burke and Mullins each collected two hits in the win.

Game 2
  • The Seahawks came out swinging in the second game as the first pitch of the game went off the base of the wall for a triple.
  • Towson starter Michael Adams was not rattled and was able to get out of the inning without any damage.  The junior got a pair of popups on the infield, and a soft liner to second.
  • Adams carried the momentum over to the second inning as he struck out the side.  He opened the third inning with his fourth-straight strikeout.
  • Wagner starter Chris Mormile was matching Adams pitch for pitch as he did not allow a base hit until the fifth inning.
  • That fifth inning proved to be the deciding inning for the Tigers.  Colin Gimblet started the inning by drawing a walk.  Noah Cabrera put down a bunt that was misplayed, putting runners on first and second.  Trey Martinez pushed a bunt passed the pitcher to load the bases with no outs.
  • With one out, A.J. Gallo plated two runs with a single to right field.
  • Colin Dyer followed by ripping a two-run double into the gap in left center.
  • WC got on the board in the sixth on a solo home run from Phil Capra.
  • Dyer started another rally in the eighth inning as he was hit by a pitch and Richie Palacios ripped a single through the right side.
  • After another successful double steal, Cuinn Mullins singled right back through the middle to score both runners.
  • The Seahawks were able to push across two runs in the ninth inning for the final margin.
  • Adams (1-0) picked up his first victory of the season after giving up just one run and striking out eight over six innings.
  • Mormile (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on three hits over five innings.
