Martinez Blast Powers Tigers to Extra-Inning Win

CATONSVILLE, Md. – Towson University sophomore catcher Trey Martinez delivered a three-run home run in the top of the 11th inning to give the Tigers a 7-3 victory over UMBC Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field

How it Happened
  • With the score tied at three heading into the 11th, Richard Miller singled up the middle with one out.  Colin Dyer followed with a double into the gap in left center to two runners in scoring position.
  • Martinez then stepped up and belted an 0-1 pitch deep over the fence in left field for the three-run shot.
  • With two outs, A.J. Gallo beat out an infield single.  Richie Palacios followed with an RBI triple off the fence in right field for the insurance run.
  • The game nearly ended in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Retrievers got a leadoff double.  After two intentional walks loaded the bases with just one out, David Marriggi got the next hitter to strike out looking.
  • Marriggi then fell behind the next hitter 3-0, only to battle back to a full count and get a flyout to right to end the inning.
  • Marriggi (1-0) picked up the victory, allowing one run on four hits over three innings.
  • Cory Callahan (0-1) took the loss despite striking out seven over 3.2 innings.  He allowed the four runs on six hits.
  • The Tigers wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as Billy Lennox drew a leadoff walk and went to second on an Andrew Cassard sacrifice bunt.  Palacios drove in Lennox with a single up the middle.
  • Colin Gimblet started the second inning with a double just inside the bag at third.  Colin Dyer followed two batters later with an RBI single to right center.
  • Towson put the leadoff hitter on for the third-straight inning, and for the third-straight inning they scored a run.  Palacios got things going with a single into the hole at second.  A failed pickoff attempt moved the runner to second.  Cuinn Mullins then singled into left, and when the ball was misplayed, Palacios hustled home to score.
  • The Retrievers capitalized on an error in the seventh inning to push across a pair of runs, then tied the game with a groundout in the eighth.
  • Starter Dean Stramara set the tone for the game as he kept the Retriever hitters off balance all game.  After allowing an infield single to the leadoff batter, Stramara retired the next 13 hitters he faced.
  • He finished the day allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and nine strikeouts over seven innings.  He was extremely efficient as 65 of his 91 pitches went for strikes.
  • Palacios led the 14-hit attack by going 3-for-5 with a triple and a pair of RBIs.
  • Burke, Gimblet and Dyer added two hits apiece.
