Gimblet Drives In Pair in Opener

TOWSON, Md.- The Towson University baseball team was locked in a tight game through the first seven innings before William & Mary got to the Tigers bullpen late in a 12-3 victory Friday afternoon in the CAA series opener at Schuerholz Park.

How It Happened
  • The Tribe (24-20, 8-5 CAA) got on the board in the first inning as a single and a hit batter came around to score on a single from Ryder Miconi and a sacrifice fly.
  • The Tigers (15-24, 3-10 CAA) tied the game in the third inning after Mark Grunberg and Richie Palacios drew one-out walks.  After a wild pitch advanced both runners, Colin Gimblet single up the middle to tie the game 2-2.
  • Towson starter Kevin Ross settled in after the first inning.  He allowed just one baserunner over the next four innings, and that runner was erased on a double play.
  • Ross was unlucky in the sixth inning as Miconi hit a towering fly ball to right field with two outs in the inning.  The wind carried the ball towards the short porch and the ball bounced off the top of the wall just out of the reach of a leaping A.J. Gallo for a two-run home run.
  • Ross (0-5) would suffer the loss after he gave up seven runs, six earned, on nine hits and five strikeouts over seven innings.
  • WM added to its lead in the eighth inning as they scored five runs on five hits.  Ryan Hall had the big hit of the frame with a two-run triple to right center.
  • The Tribe extended its advantage in the ninth with back-to-back homers from Miconi and Hunter Smith.
  • Towson got one run back on the first pitch of the ninth as Bo Plagge delivered a pinch hit home run to left center.  The home run was the first career hit for the freshman.
  • Nick Raquet (2-1) picked up the victory after allowing two runs on three hits over 5.2 innings.  He walked six and struck out eight in the outing.
  • Matt Golczewski returned to the mound for the first time since opening weekend and retired the only hitter he faced in the eighth inning.
  • Gimblet led the Tigers with a pair of hits.
