Tennis Unable to Hold on in Mid-Week Match at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – The Towson University fell 4-3 at Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival Delaware on Wednesday afternoon at the Delaware Field House Outdoor Courts.
 
Towson fell to 10-8 overall and 2-3 in conference play with the loss. Delaware improved to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in CAA play.
 
How it Happened
  • Delaware opened the match by securing the doubles point. A.J. Gomer and Renate van Oorschodt defeated Amanda Studnicki and Denny LaMachia 7-5 at the top spot for the Tigers' only point. Sarah Hall and Sara Komer earned a 6-3 win over Lucy Williams and Lucy Gloninger at No. 2 doubles. At the final and third flight, Brooke Pilkington and Arielle Shuren earned a 6-3 win over Nicole Shakhnazarova and Yevgeniya Shusterman.
  • A.J. Gomer posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Denny LaMachia at the third singles flight.
  • At No. 2 doubles, Sara Komer defeated Lucy Williams 6-3, 6-4.
  • Lucy Gloninger tied up the match at two points apiece with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Amanda Studnicki at the sixth singles flight.
  • Renate van Oorschodt used a 7-5, 6-3 win against Sarah Hall at the fifth flight to pull Towson ahead.
  • The Blue Hens secured the match victory with a pair of three-set wins. Brooke Pilkington held on for a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 win over Nicole Shakhnazarova at the top flight. At No. 4 singles, Annie Jaskulski posted a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win against Barbora Vasilkova.
 
Behind the Numbers
  • Doubles play once again proved to be key as the Tigers were unable to rebound after dropping the opening doubles point. Seven of Towson's eight losses this season have come when not winning doubles. Of those seven losses, five have been decided by one point and doubles being the pivotal point.
  • Lucy Gloninger extended her singles win streak to eight-straight matches. She is 19-3 overall on the season and 13-1 in dual match play.
  • A.J. Gomer has now won three-straight singles matches to improve to 13-12 on the season and 7-9 in dual match action.
