TOWSON, Md. – Towson University got a strong start from
David Marriggi, but UNCW was able to get to the bullpen in defeating the Tigers, 8-0, Thursday afternoon in the CAA series opener.
How it Happened
- Marriggi got off to a strong start as he struckout the first two hitters he faced. After allowing a double, Marriggi came back and fanned his third batter to end the inning.
- Marriggi ran into some trouble in the third, but he was able to get out of the inning without any damage by striking out his fourth hitter with two on.
- UNCW (27-26, 15-7 CAA) got on the board in the third inning on a Casey Golden solo home run to left center.
- The Seahawks threatened to add to the lead in the inning, but Marriggi added two more strikeouts, including the final one with the bases loaded.
- Nick Feight would add to the Seahawk lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to center.
- Marriggi (4-6) would depart after five innings, allowing just two runs and matching a career-high with seven strikeouts.
- The Tiger bullpen was greeted rudely as UNCW pushed across six runs in the sixth inning, including a two-run triple off the bat of Mason Berne.
- Alex Cuas would settle things down from that point as he did not allow a run in his three innings of work.
- Alex Royalty (8-2) allowed just four hits and struck out eight over eight innings to earn the victory.
- Palacios led the offense by going 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base.
