Tigers Nipped in Final Seconds of Overtime

TOWSON, Md. – With just three seconds left in the second overtime period, the Towson University women's soccer team was nipped by the game's final goal as George Mason won 2-1.

After a foul and some confusion on which side would take the free kick, Mason (1-6-0) was awarded the free position chance 25 yards from Towson's goal after the clock was stopped.

The Patriots converted in the 110th minute on an Erin Mitchell goal from Emily Littell, who played in the free ball.

How It Happened
  • Mason put pressure on Towson (3-4-1) early in the first half on a counter attack, but Tiger goalie Taylor Sebolao made a diving save to keep the sheet clean in the 14th minute.
  • The Patriots came back downfield eight minutes later for a dangerous header chance in the 22nd minute by Nia Elbeck. The chance skimmed just over the cross bar.
  • Sebolao made three saves in the first half to send it to a 0-0 tie 45 minutes into the game.
  • Ten minutes into the fresh half, George Mason broke the tie on a penalty kick, taken by Littell in the 56th minute.
  • In the 71st minute, Towson leveled the match at 1-1 as junior forward McKenzie McCaull chipped a pass over to senior midfielder Maddie Bové. The latter sent in a floating shot to the far right post for her second strike of the year.
  • Neither side found the back of the net for the remainder of the half, sending Towson to its second-straight overtime game at the Tiger Soccer Complex.
  • In the 94th minute, Towson had a great chance to end the game as Justine Stoner sailed in a cross to McCaull, but the chance went just wide of the left post.
  • Three minutes later after a Sebolao save, sophomore forward Elizabeth Coletti sent in a cross for McCaull once again. The junior got her head on the ball, but the attempt went over the cross bar by less than a foot.
  • In the waning seconds of the second overtime period, the Tigers were whistled for a foul, setting up the set piece for Mason.
