Tigers Return Home to Host Two Big CAA Matches

Back on Our Home Court: After playing the last two weekends on the road, the Towson University volleyball team returns to SECU Arena to host a pair of Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) contests. The Tigers welcome Hofstra to town for an 8 p.m. first serve on Friday before Northeastern comes on SECU Arena on Sunday at 1 p.m. Links to the live stats and the video feed can be found on the schedule page of TowsonTigers.com. Fans can also follow the team on Twitter (@Towson_VB) for updates.

Looking at the Tigers: The Tigers opened CAA play with a pair of road victories last weekend at Elon and William & Mary. Junior Carola Biver finished the weekend with a team-best 30 kills, including a season-high 18 in the win over the Tribe. Junior Jocelyn Kuilan paces the Tigers on the season with 184 kills, 76 digs and a team-high 20 service aces. Biver is contributing 166 kills and 127 digs while sophomore Marrisa Wonders has dished out a season-high 422 assists. Redshirt junior Anna Holehouse leads the defensive efforts with 294 digs while junior Olamide Sonuga has a team-high 55 blocks.

Scouting the Opponents: Hofstra split its two matches last weekend and enters Friday's match with a 9-7 overall record and sits at 1-1 in CAA play. The Pride are led by Laura Masciullo who has 202 kills, 94 digs and 25 blocks. Luisa Sydlik has handed out 701 assists while Michela Rucli has 66 blocks.

Northeastern picked up wins over UNCW and College of Charleston last weekend and improved to 9-6 overall and 2-0 in CAA play. The Huskies visit Delaware on Friday night before coming to Towson on Sunday. Amy Underdown had a pair of double-doubles last week and now leads the squad with 194 kills and 172 digs. Samantha Shupe has contributed 320 assists while Gabrielle Eyl leads the defense with 336 digs.

Series History: Hofstra leads the all-time series with the Tigers 43-15. The Tigers took two of the three meetings last year, winning at home and earning a 3-0 victory in the first round of the CAA Tournament. Jocelyn Kuilan had a combined 29 kills and five service aces in the three matches against the Pride.

Sunday's contest will be the 35th all-time meeting between the Tigers and Huskies. Northeastern leads the series, 20-15. The two squads split their meetings last year with each team claiming victory on their home court.

Make Puerto Rico Shine Again: Tiger volleyball players, and Puerto Rican natives Julymar Otero, Jocelyn Kuilan and Carola Biver, wanted to do something to help in the recovery efforts from Hurricane Maria. The Tigers are asking people to donate flashlights or batteries at both matches this weekend and at Saturday's football game that can be sent to the island.

Strong Starts: Towson added to its win total with a pair of CAA road victories last weekend. The Tigers improved to 16-0 on the year with the wins. Already off to the best start in school history, the Tigers need three more wins to tie the 2003 squad for the longest win streak in program history.

Closing in on the Century Mark: Junior Jocelyn Kuilan had 22 kills last week which gave her 184 for the season and 982 kills for her career. Kuilan enters play this weekend needing just 18 kills to become the 14th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills. She would become the first Tiger to reach the mark since Katy Buck (2010-12).

In the Poll: Riding their success during the first month of the season, the Tigers remained in the Volleyball Magazine Mid-Major Top 25 Poll this week. Towson grabbed the No. 23 spot in this week's poll after receiving 86 points. It marked the second-straight week the Tigers were the No. 23 team in the poll. The Mid-Major Top 25 features teams not part of one of the power five conferences (ACC, SEC, Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12).

Welcome Hometown Heroes: The Tigers will celebrate Hometown Heroes night on Friday against Hofstra. Military personnel and first responders can receive four free tickets to the match and the Tigers will have a color guard for the national anthem.

Up Next: The Tigers hit the road for four-straight matches following this weekend's action. Towson is back in SECU Arena on Oct. 20 to host Elon at 7 p.m.
