TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University women's basketball team gave the 2018-19 basketball season at SECU Arena a first-game blessing with a 78-53 win. Led by redshirt sophomore
Kionna Jeter who scored 27 points, the Tigers took their first-ever win over the University of Massachusetts.
How it Happened
- Sophomore Jalynn Holmes scored the first Towson points at SECU Arena for the season 30 seconds into the game, helping the home team start off with a 6-0 lead.
- Five minutes in the Minutewomen would tie it up, 6-6, before the Tigers went on a 12-0 run and ended the first period leading 22-9.
- Domination only continued in the second period, along with the scoring effort from Jeter and Holmes, the defense made a difference. At the end of the first half Towson had 15 defensive rebounds and five blocked shots.
- The Tigers reached a 23-point lead in the first half, which would be well out-done in the third period with a 28-point advantage and 16:45 left to play.
- UMass was led by Bre Hampton-Bey who scored 12 points and Hailey Leidel who contributed 11.
- With just over four minutes left to play, the Minutewomen cut the lead to 19 points, giving them time to cut more if possible, but the home team continued to make buckets.
- Towson outscored the road team by at least five points each quarter, and created several turnovers, getting the ball 25 times from UMass.
- Solid shooting from the Tigers sealed the win in the end as there were periods of time with no bucket for either team but the lead remained.
Beyond the Box
- All of Towson's roster saw the floor tonight as freshmen Jennifer Davis and Shavonne Smith entered the last minute of the game.
- Jeter finished with a strong stat line of 27 points, six rebounds, four assists and five steals. Freshman Aislinn Flynn grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Holmes dropped 16 points and led the team in assists with five. Camp had a team-best five blocks and scored nine points.
- Sunday's meeting was just the second between UMass and Towson, after the Minutewomen took the win in 2017 today's win goes down in the books as the first program win over the Amherst-based team.
- Nukiya Mayo returned to the floor after missing the first game, the Preseason All-CAA selection played 11 minutes with seven points, three rebounds and an assist.
- The Tigers had a strong shooting performance finishing with 63.6 percent from the free throw line and 42.9 percent from the field.
