Newcomers See Action in Towson's Season Opener at Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Tuesday evening opened the 2018-19 season for the Towson women's basketball team, in a road trip to Wake Forest. The Tigers fell 60-53 to the Deamon Deacons but saw a solid start to the year.

Three of Towson's freshmen saw their first collegiate minutes, along with three of this year's transfers. Kionna Jeter led the way with 13 points while Jalynn Holmes scored 12. Jeter and freshmen Janeen Camp both had six rebounds each to pace the team. Jeter also tied with Qierra Murray for team-high three assists.

How it Happened
  • The opening three minutes passed with neither team scoring a bucket. It wasn't until the 7:36 mark that Wake Forest broke the silence and then went on a 10-0 run.
  • Camp scored the first Towson points and finished the first quarter with four points to lead the team.
  • In the second period a three-point basket from Danielle Durjan brought the Tigers within one point, but the Deacons would go on to pull ahead by 11 points with five minutes remaining in the half.
  • The teams went into the locker room with a 14-point differential.
  • Towson made halftime adjustments as necessary and came out strong defensively in the third quarter, holding Wake Forest to just three points through seven minutes.
  • With 2:45 left to play in the third the Deacons took a 12-point lead following a free throw, that was quickly cut to 10 following a jumper by Jeter.
  • The Tigers came within six points with 9:05 to go and continued to battle through the fourth period.
  • A steal and layup from Ryan Holder cut the lead to five and less than a minute later Jeter reduced it to four points.
  • Wake Forest called a timeout with 31 seconds on the clock and only two possessions needed for the road team to tie it up or take the lead.
  • The following 20 seconds included fouls, missed free throws and turnovers, only for a free throw from the home team to extend the lead to five points.
  • Towson's closest attempt to tying the game was with 37 seconds to go, free throws ended up sealing the win for the Deacons in the end.

Behind the Numbers
  • Janeen Camp, Aislinn Flynn and Cydney Rivera all played their first collegiate minutes. The trio of freshmen finished with a combined nine points and nine rebounds.
