HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The Towson University women's basketball team wrapped up its nonconference schedule at Marshall on Saturday afternoon, heading home for the holiday break with a 76-69 win. The Tigers move to 6-5 while the Herd fall to 5-7.
Towson was led by Q, Murray with a season-high 20 points, while
Kionna Jeter had 18 points and
Nukiya Mayo had 16. Freshman
Janeen Camp led the team with 10 rebounds while Murray had five assists.
How it Happened
- The first quarter was evenly played, each team trading baskets and ending with a score of 19-17 led by the Herd.
- In the second period Towson made two straight buckets, from Murray and Nukiya Mayo to tie it up 21-21 and the basket trading continued.
- With two minutes left in the second, Marshall took a 7-0 run to enter halftime leading 39-27.
- The Tigers took a page out of the Herd's book and took their own 7-0 run to cut the lead to five with almost seven minutes remaining in the third period.
- Marshall continued to hold a slight advantage with a five-point lead at the first media timeout of the second half following a big three-point bucket from Q. Murray.
- Towson took full advantage of the media timeout and came out with a three from Mayo followed by a layup from Murray to tie up the game with 1:10 left in the quarter.
- The third quarter ended tied at 53-53, before a fiery fourth period ensued.
- Marshall led for a total of seven minutes in the fourth quarter, by as many as six points, but the Tigers battled.
- In the final 10 minutes Towson scored 23 points, mostly from the 20-5 run the Tigers put on.
- A three-point bucket from Murray with 1:02 on the clock changed the course of the game, giving Towson the lead once again for the first time in nine minutes.
- With a two-point lead, a layup plus five made free throws in the final 40 seconds sealed the win for the road team.
Beyond the Box
- The Tigers finished with their best nonconference record since the 2016-17 season, with a 6-5 mark.
- This season Towson is 4-1 this season when three players score in double figures.
- Janeen Camp's 10 rebounds and six blocks are both a career high. The freshman was two points away from a double-double.
- Kionna Jeter finished with nine rebounds, one away from a double-double, and her season high in boards.
- Q. Murray's season-high in points was also followed by a season-high seven rebounds, and five assists with a season-high three steals.
- Ryan Holder shot 100 percent on the day, 3-for-3 from the field and 2-for-2 on the free throw line, with four rebounds, one block and steal.
Nonconference Wrap
- Towson now looks to enter the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) schedule on January 4th against Drexel on the road.
- This nonconference schedule included three Power 5 teams, two from the ACC and one from the Big 12. In the season opener the Tigers lost by seven to ACC member Wake Forest on the road.
- Towson holds a 3-5 road record, including the three Power 5 trips to Wake Forest, then-No. 12 Syracuse and West Virginia who is receiving votes.
- The Tigers faced four members of the Atlantic 10 conference, taking wins over UMass, La Salle and Saint Joseph's.
- Those wins were three of the biggest wins for Towson so far this season, a 25-point win over UMass, 24 points over La Salle and 21 over Saint Joseph's.
