TOWSON, Md. – Tuesday morning the Towson University women's basketball team took a bounce-back win over local enemy Loyola University (Md.) 62-57.
The Tigers were led by
Nukiya Mayo who scored 15 and had a team-high seven rebounds. Redshirt sophomore
Kionna Jeter finished with 13 points and led the team with three steals.
How it Happened
- The home team opened the game with a bucket from Mayo, leading to a back-and-forth between the two squads.
- With four minutes left in the first period the Tigers were leading by five and ended with a 16-12 lead after the first 10. Towson scored five second chance points off three offensive rebounds.
- The Tigers saw points from everyone who played, with seven scorers at the half. The home team's defense did not allow a Loyola point for almost four minutes between the end of the second period and the start of the third.
- Towson reached a peak of a 23-point lead following the Greyhounds drought, and nine points from Mayo.
- As the fourth quarter began, the Tigers led by 12 points, but Loyola began to score from three, cutting into the lead.
- At the 6:45 mark, Alexis Gray sank a three ball that cut the lead to just eight points. Three minutes and two seconds passed before anyone scored again, the silence broken by Mayo with a single free throw.
- With 2:28 left to play the Tigers held a five-point lead, after another good three-point bucket, this time from Bri Betz-White. Betz-White would bring her team within three points of tying it up with 1:33 to go, but the Greyhounds could not hold on.
- The remaining 90 seconds of the game included three steals and three turnovers, along with missed shots on each side.
- Mayo went to the line with 34 seconds to go, making one of her free throws to extend the lead to four points.
- Loyola was not able to tie it up in the remaining time, and send Jeter to the line with 17 seconds left, as she lifted the Tigers to a five-point lead and seal the win.
From the Box
- The Greyhounds entered today's game with an overall three-point shooting percentage of 25 percent, but shot 66.7 percent from three in the third period and 36 percent overall.
- Towson had points from eight of the nine players who saw the floor, including freshman Janeen Camp who had another solid outing with eight points, five rebounds and a block. The Tigers had 20 points off the bench.
- Jalynn Holmes led the team in blocks with three, as the Tigers finished with 10 blocks overall.
- Jeter shot 50 percent from all locations today, while Ryan Holder was perfect from the field and went 1-of-2 from the free throw line.
- Towson's nine offensive rebounds were a season low, the team averages 20 offensive boards per game and its lowest before today was 14.
Looking Ahead
The Tigers get back on the road, for the next five games. Towson will travel to face Saint Joseph's in Philadelphia next Monday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m., followed by a trip to West Virginia to face WVU on Dec. 20 and Marshall on Dec. 22.
