Tigers Use Long Ball and Pitching to Defeat Aggies

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Towson University baseball team got home runs from Richie Palacios and Richard Miller, and a strong start from left hander David Marriggi as the Tigers defeated New Mexico State, 11-6, in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Presley Askew Field.

How it Happened
  • The Tigers (1-1) got on the board in the third inning on a Richie Palacios three-run home run to right field.
  • The Aggies (1-1) answered back with two runs in the home-half of the inning.
  • The Towson offense came alive in the sixth inning as Richard Miller delivered a two-run homer to right field.
  • The hit began a streak of seven-straight Tigers reaching safely.  After the home run, Charlie Watters and Logan Burke singled.  Dirk Masters walked to load the bases.
  • Tristan Howerton drew a walk to score a run and Andrew Cassard followed with a two-run single through the right side.
  • After a walk to Mark Grunberg, Palacios drove in a run with a fielder's choice, and when the throw to first was wide, a second runner scored on the play.
  • Towson added a run in the seventh as Howerton drove in a run with a single to left field.
  • NMSU tried to get back into the game in the home-half of the seventh as they pushed across four runs in the frame.  The damage could have been worse if it wasn't for the right arm of Colin Gimblet.
  • With the bases loaded and no outs, Gimblet caught the ball in right field and fired a strike to home plate.  Howerton did a great job blocking the plate and the runner was called out.
  • Marriggi (1-0) was strong on the bump as he allowed just two runs on four hits and five strikeouts over five innings.
  • Gavin Weyman closed the door in his Towson debut as he did not allow a hit over two shutout innings.

Inside the Numbers
  • The victory over the Aggies was the first in five meetings between the two teams.
  • The win is the first for head coach Matt Tyner at Towson.
  • Palacios finished day by going 2-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs.
  • Cassard had a strong game out of the nine spot, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
