Late Offense Not Enough in Series Opener

RICHMDOND, Va. – The Towson University baseball team got six hits from the top three hitters in the lineup, but it was not enough as the Tigers fell, 11-5, to Richmond in the first game of a three-game series Friday afternoon at Pitt Field.

How it Happened
  • The Spiders (3-2) jumped out to the early lead as they pushed acros single runs in the first two innings.
  • UR extended their lead in the third as Sage Bruhl hit a two-run homer as part of a five-run inning.
  • Towson (1-3) got back into the game in the fifth inning after Dirk Masters drew a walk and came around to score on a Mark Grunberg double to right center.  Richie Palacios followed with an RBI double to right.
  • After a Colin Gimblet single to left field, Richard Miller lined a sacrifice fly to right field.  The fourth run of the inning scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Spiders got two runs back in the home-half of the inning on a ground-rule double and a sacrifice fly.
  • The lead grew to 11-4 after an error helped UR plate two more runs in the eighth.
  • Towson got back on the board in the ninth after a two-base error put Palacios on second.  Gimblet plated the runner with a double to the gap in left center.
  • Gavin Weyman (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on four hits over 2.1 innings.
  • Josh Seils was effective out of the bullpen as he retired the first six hitters he faced.  He would end up allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits over 2.2 innings.
  • Tim Miller (1-1) picked up the win for the Spiders, allowing four runs on six hits over five innings.
  • Palacios paced the offense by going 3-for-5 with a double, RBI and two runs scored.
  • Gimblet added two hits, including a double, and an RBI.
