Tigers Fall in Game of Runs to William & Mary

TOWSON, Md. – After a quick start, the Towson University women's basketball team was locked in a game of runs Sunday afternoon at SECU Arena. The Tigers fell to William & Mary 75-63 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) women's basketball action.

Towson wore pink Under Armour jerseys for Sunday's game, honoring those affected by breast cancer and their families. Towson was joined at SECU Arena by Susan G. Komen Maryland at the game.

The Tigers (8-14, 3-8 CAA) put three players in double figures, led by a 19-point, 12-rebound double-double from Nukiya Mayo. Raine Bankston and Etalyia Vogt joined her with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

William & Mary (15-7, 6-5 CAA) had a pair with 20 points as Jenna Green posted a game-best 22 while teammate Bianca Boggs put up 21.

How it Happened
  • Towson jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead and held William & Mary off the board for the first four minutes of the game. The run was capped by a Danielle Durjan 3-pointer
  • The Tigers continued a strong start and took a 9-2 lead as Mary Cuevas hit Mayo with a pass down low with five minutes to play in the frame.
  • The Tribe went on a burst of their own, stringing together a 15-5 run over a four-minute stretch and took a 20-14 lead. Vogt knocked down a trey and cut the lead back down to three, 20-17 early in the second quarter.
  • Towson hung with the Tribe through the second quarter thanks to some timely threes. William & Mary built to a 10-point lead but Towson cut it back to four with 1:40 to play after a scramble under the rim.
  • Mayo missed a layup under pressure and grabbed her own rebound, going up for the put-back. The second chance missed but Maia Lee was there for the clean up and the put-back.
  • William & Mary hit three-straight buckets to regain a 10-point lead, 41-31, at halftime.
  • After the Tribe gained a 14-point, 52-38 lead, the Tigers put together an 8-2 burst over the final final minutes of the third quarter.
  • Mariah Gray kicked things off with a 3-pointer, followed by back-to-back free throws from Bankston. After a Tribe bucket from Gabby Rogers, Towson got three points in a row from a Mayo free throw and a Bankston jumper, making it 54-46 with 2:42 to play in the period.
  • Green knocked down a 3-pointer with two seconds left in the frame to cap the 10 minutes with William & Mary leading 57-46.
  • Towson pulled back within six of the Tribe lead as Bankston made good on an and-one in the first minute of the final quarter, followed by a layup inside from Mayo.
  • Foul trouble down the stretch hurt the Tigers and put William & Mary on the line 10 times in the fourth. The Tribe made 10 of those chances to seal the game at 75-63.

Behind the Numbers
  • In addition to the Tiger trio in double figures, Cuevas added six points along with 11 rebounds. She finished with three blocked shots as well.
  • The two teams, who lead the CAA in blocks and blocks per game, finished with seven apiece.
  • Towson showed fast hands on defense, coming up with 14 steals, including four each from Mayo and Bankston. Vogt contributed three steals as well. Towson added 22 points on 21 Tribe turnovers as well.
  • The Tigers continued strong play on the boards, snarring 49 rebounds, while limiting William & Mary to 34. Towson had 27 offensive rebounds, leading to 17 second-chance points.
  • William & Mary hit 27 of its 58 field goals (46.6 percent), including eight from distance on 17 tries (47.1 percent).
  • Towson knocked down 32.4 percent of its field goals (23-71), including a strong showing from three-point range (6-of-17). Vogt hit two of her three chances from deep, with both her makes coming several feet back from the line.
