ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Towson University women's track and field sophomore
Helnsarah Penda took home first in the 60-meter hurdles while serving as the leadoff leg for the 4x200-meter relay team that set a new indoor school record as the Tigers finished third at the Navy Multi Mix Meet inside Wesley Brown Field House Thursday.
Penda crossed the line in a time of 8.89 seconds before joining sophomore
Jamila Brown, junior
Rachel Laryea and junior
Jaina McLean to post a time of 1:43.27 in the 4x200, breaking the previous record of 1:45.91 set in 2010.
How It Happened
- Penda was one of three Tigers to finish in the top eight in the hurdles as sophomore Aniyah Allen finished third and sophomore Shelby Francis, a transfer from La Salle, came in eighth.
- In the 60-meter dash, Brown was fourth, followed by McLean (5th) and Laryeah (6th). Competing in her first career meet at Towson since transferring from Essex Community College, junior Zellie Charles finished seventh.
- Charles finished first in the long jump with a mark of 18-2.5. Her career best is 18-10.75 set at the Fastrack Last Chance meet on Feb. 25, 2017.
- Also in the 4x200 relay, the team of Charles, junior Lauren Woods, junior Druex Collins and sophomore Toni James finished second in a time of 1:45.30, a mark that would have also broken the previous school record.
- In the 400 meters, James led four Tigers in the top 12, finishing seventh. Woods was ninth, Collins was 11th and sophomore Deandra James was 12th.
- The Tigers swept the top three spots in the shot put with junior Lauren Coleman and junior Phontavia Sawyer both posting ECAC qualifying marks. Coleman took first with a mark of 51-1 while Sawyer finished second at 46-9. Senior Ksenia Safonova was third at 41-7 and freshman Jessica Manuel was eighth.
- In the weight throw, Safonova took first with an ECAC qualifying mark of 56-1. Coleman was second at 52-6 and junior Taylor Giles was third at 51-10.5. Manuel finished ninth.
- In the high jump, sophomore Aniyah Allen placed second with a leap of 5-3 while junior Naja McAdam was third, also at 5-3. Freshman Briana Gamble was fifth.
