Tigers Let One Slip Away

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team committed three  costly errors in the ninth inning that led to five unearned runs as UMBC came back to beat the Tigers, 6-4, Wednesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.

How it Happened
  • UMBC (3-9) entered the ninth inning trailing 4-1.  With a runner on first and one out, back-to-back errors plated run.
  • After a walk loaded the bases, Matt Campbell tied the game with a two-run single.  A throwing error on the play advanced both runners and AJ Wright followed with a two-run single through the left side.
  • The Tigers (3-12) were in control up until that point as they got strong pitching for the second-straight day.
  • Dean Stramara got the start and allowed just one run on five hits over five innings. He was able to get out of two of the five innings with inning-ending double plays.
  • Josh Seils pitched a perfect sixth inning and Jake Pecilunas allowed just one hit over two shutout innings.
  • Joe Enea (0-2) was the unlucky benefactor of the errors as he was saddled with the loss.  He allowed five runs, all unearned, on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
  • Towson opened the scoring in the first inning as Andrew Cassard single to right and Richie Palacios walked.
  • Richard Miller put down a sacrifice bunt ahead of Colin Gimblet's RBI single to center.  When the ball was misplayed in center, Palacios hustled home for the second run.
  • Billy Lennox scored the third run of the game in the fourth inning as he singled to right center to start the inning.  With two outs, Palacios singled through the right side to score Lennox from second.
  • The lead grew to 4-1 in the seventh on a groundout from Lennox.  The groundout scored Mark Grunberg who singled to start the inning and went to third on an error.
  • Grunberg led the offense with three hits.
