Tigers Finish Third in Five Team Meet on Senior Day

TOWSON, Md. - Led by seniors Tyra McKellar and Gabriella Yarussi, the Towson University women's gymnastics team totaled a season-high 196.400 points to finish third out of five teams in the Tigers' regular-season finale at SECU Arena Sunday.

Towson (13-16) posted the fourth-highest score in school history and most points since it had 196.525 at George Washington on Mar. 15, 2015.

West Virginia finished first with 196.775 points while No. 23 N.C. State was second, just 0.225 points behind the Mountaineers with 196.550 points. The Tigers were just 0.150 points behind the EAGL rival Wolfpack while Cornell came in fourth (193.475) and William & Mary was fifth (192.825).

How It Happened
  • Towson began the day with a bye during the first rotation before beginning its day on vault during the second. McKellar finished third with a career-high 9.850 while junior Cortni Baker finished fifth with a 9.825. Yarussi was the third Tiger to finish in the top eight as she finished in a three-way tie for eighth with a 9.775.
  • McKellar and Baker were also the top two finishers for Towson on bars as McKellar also placed third with a 9.875 while Baker and freshman Tess Zientek tied for sixth at 9.800. Junior Brittney Ranti came in 12th with a 9.775, just below her career high of 9.800.
  • The Tigers placed two in the top three on beam and three in the top-10, led by Yarussi and junior Mary Elle Arduino who each tied for second with a 9.900. Meanwhile, senior Katie McGrady tied her career high with a 9.825 to finish 10th.
  • Towson saved its best performance for last, placing four gymnasts in the top six and five in the top-10 on floor as the team totaled a season-high 49.400 which was the highest of the five team scores in the event. Yarussi took home first with a career-high 9.925 while Baker, McGrady and McKellar all tied for fourth with a 9.875 which was a career best for McGrady. Sophomore Melissa Temkov just missed her career high by 0.025 points as she placed 10th with a 9.850.
  • McKellar was the lone Tiger to placed in the all-around as she finished third with a 39.400 which ties her for the fifth-highest score in school history with Erin Shanley and Kacy Cantanzaro. McKellar also owns the fourth-highest score at 39.425.
Up Next For Towson
  • The Tigers will host the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championship next Saturday, March 24 at 2 p.m.
  • Towson will welcome No. 19 George Washington, No. 23 N.C. State, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Pittsburgh to SECU Arena for the 21st annual championship.
  • The Tigers' best finish at the EAGL championship came in its inaugural year of 1996 when the finished second. The team placed third in 2001 and 2015.
